    Vomiting and lethargic

Hi, I ran across this forum while looking up health tips for my dog and figured I'd give it a try.  He's about a year old mutt of some sort of terrier variety.  He hasn't eaten since last night, and even then it was a reduced amount.  A few days ago I started switching from Pro Plan Lamb and Rice to Pro Plan Sensitive Skin and Stomach.  We switched for his skin though, not his stomach.  About an hour ago he vomited (and rather forcefully for him) white foamy liquid in larger amounts than he ever has, and this is the first time recently.  What worries me most is that he is rather lethargic.  Rain or shine when he's let outside he races around a tree in my yard with a family of birds in it.  Tonight I've had to lead him all the way out to his favorite patch of grass.  Most of the material I've found says to restrict dog's access to food for a while, but that seems a bit much since he hasn't been eating already.  I can't even entice him with treats and peanut butter.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Vet now.  That magic word "lethargy" -- put that with nausea, etc. and it can spell BAD things that will get far worse if you wait.  This is totally abnormal behavior for this dog -- vet -- *today* -- in fact, NOW if you can.

I think I agree with Callie.  I hope he feels better.  Please post how he makes out later, I like hearing updates.  I wonder when I don't see them.

Thanks for the advice everyone.  We've got an appointment in half an hour, so we'll see how it goes.  It's a new vet as I've recently moved, so hopefully everything is well.

Since there's no real way of knowing exactly what's wrong at this point, according to the vet, we're trying the easy route first.  No food or drink for 12 hours, subcutaneous fluids, and anti-vomit medicine and food starting tomorrow.  Hopefully he gets better shortly :(

Just an FYI for the future, Lamb and Rice is good for dogs with bad skin and feet. There is something in it. If your dog has bad skin you may want to try a shampoo with oatmeal in it.
Keep us posted! I hope your baby feels better!

Hello, I'm new to this site but found it after searching my dog's health problems. I have a 1-1/2-year-old male cocker spaniel who has recurring bouts of vomiting and diarrhea. After seeing several vets, I was told he has colitis along with some type of bacterial infection, although all his blood work, fecal cultures, and urinalysis are negative. He is on Metronidizole and chloramphenicol (for salmonella which he doesn't have). This is his sixth bout of "colitis" and bacterial infections. I believe he may be getting sick so much because the vets prescribe antibiotics so much. Anyone think there may be some truth to that? Our vet bills are outrageous, exceeding $1100 this year alone.

Anyway, I'm going to start using nzyme.com products this week (the treats and the probiotic). Anyone ever use these?

Kmaire - what are you feeding him?

I used Nzymes for a while and put OX-Y-DROPS in the water bowl for anti-bactteria and anti-fungal.

My dog had really bad loose stools and didn't like any dry food, even the best brands like Innova ,,so I started to homecook for him, chicken and white rice or boiled hamburger and white rice.  Vet prescribed immodiumAD for bad diaherrea.

I swtiched him to premade raw food and he's been perfect stool-wise and loves his food.

Apple cider vinegar (miracle food) in the food or water  and acidoliphus given separatley in some water may help.

Hollysmom, I feed him Natural Balance Venison and Brown Rice dry food and mix it with Natural Balance canned liver. He really loves it. I just started him on nzymes about 1-1/2 weeks ago. He's on the probiotic and the nzymes antioxidant treat. I wasn't sure about the ox-y-drops but I think I may order those. Since he's been on the nzymes, his stool has been perfect and no more vomiting or diarrhea. I'm keeping my fingers crossed on this one.
