blood in stool

• blood in stool Meg Posted : 8/13/2006 10:25:47 AM MY frenchie pup is now 16 weeks old, and this morning when she went out to to do her business, she had one solid stool, followed by several smaller stools that got looser as she went, all of the loose ones has traces of blood, and the last time she tried to poo, all she produced were a few drops of dark red(not bright) blood.  I can not reach a vet, as it is sunday in a small town, so the soonest I can get her there is tomorrow morning.  Any Ideas what this might be or what I should do until then?  She is still acting very playful, and is not lethargic, and she is not showing any other signs of being sick, such as throwing up. • Lee McCartney Posted : 8/13/2006 12:35:15 PM Sounds like a touch of colitis or gastroenteritis.  Has she been feed any table scraps or other human food?  Blood in the stool is nothing to mess around with.  If I were you, I'd fast her for the next 24 hrs.  If it gets any worse (especially if blood becomes bright red) or if she stops drinking get her into an emergency vet ASAP.  Puppies can  dehydrate quite quickly.  Most likely will they will start her on a round of Flagyl and/or another antibiotic such as Baytril. I have a 4 yr old that suffers from IBS so bloody vomitous & stools are old hat around here. • jones Posted : 8/13/2006 4:13:55 PM Could be coccidia, very common in puppies. Usually it's not serious but does need to be treated. • Erica Posted : 8/13/2006 8:12:26 PM It sounds like either coccidia or giardia. Neither are life threatening, as long as they are treated. Your vet will probably put your dog on Flagyl or Panacure. Make sure to bring a stool sample to your vet, this makes it easier on the dog. There were never any parasites noticed by the vet, it was more a matter of his diet from what they understood. He was the same, always had energy, never not himself. We went through a couple different types of food until his poops got to be even solid. They were runny!!! my dog loves to run, and he goes fast. after he has a good chase like that i always know he's going to have a  poop, and it will probably be a runny one, or even 2, then he eats a bunch of grass, he does that a lot anyway.
