    Seizure? How do I know?

I'm very scared and worried for my buddy right now, any suggestions or words of advice would be greatly appreciated.

My 2 year old lab woke me up in the middle of the night by continually jumping in bed with us. (he's not allowed in the bed) I figured something was up and turned on the light and we both got out of bed. He paced back and forth between the two of us, panting, and shortly after started randomly revving up and jumping like a dog on a slick floor, or like he had been poked in the rear. His ears were pinned back, and his tail tucked under and he wouldn't sit for more than a few seconds when told to. He was obviously freaked out and jumpy about something. I called the emergency vet as it was the early morning hours and they weren't sure what it could be so we brought him in. He seemed to calm down a bit and act normal on the way out to the car but then started up again in the car with the nervous twich/jump like someone had startled him from behind. Again, when we reached the vet's office he was wagging his tail, sniffing and ready to greet people. Then shortly after we were inside the exam room - again with the pacing and and random jump starts, but he seems like he snaps out of it for a bit when a new person walks in the room. They ran a blood panel, with normal results. They gave him some valium, and checked him over. Normal sounding heart, but a little faster, most likely due to the panting. Normal temp. Red in the ears and whites of the eyes. Possibly an ear infection. They figured since the blood came back normal it's most likely a toxin or some sort or epilepsy.
After the valium - less panting, white returns to ears and eyes, he responded to commands, and back to his usual self. Now he's at the regular vet's all day getting more tests done, such as thyroid, EEG and some others.
Where do I go from here, I'm at a loss and I don't know what to do. :(

I just wanted to say that I can't help you, but I don't blame you for being scared, I would be also. Someone will come along here soon with some ideas,,or experiences for you. Please check back and let us know what your vet says.
    Hang in there!!

Did they check his nervous system at all? Sometimes when there is a nervous system malfunction the signs are often irregular and difficult to diagnose. Just a thought since you are spending a lot of $$$ on tests that you might want to mention it.

there is also a remote possibility that the dog c ould have heard a noise, as far as a mile awauy that set him off...I think it might be a good idea to keep a video camera on hand and if it repeats get a  video of it to show the vet...To me, and this is a thousand miles away,it doesn;t sound like a seizure but it  could be... I wouldn;t draw any conclusion untill you see a repeat...if it does repeat, if you can just throw a blanket over the pup to avoid him hurting him self...Do't try to kiss him or get near the head because if he is halucinating he might bite unintentionaly...but get ahold of a video camera in case...

whoops, forgot to add seizures are not by any means the end of the world...they can be controlled with proper meds...good luck
