post op pyometra

My 10 year old female Golden Retriever didn't look too well the whole week so I made an appt to the vet this past Friday. She wasn't eating her normal dry food and I even tempted her with wet food (only thing she would eat was a marrow bone) but this past Thursday she started throwing up constantly, she couldn't even take down water. So I decided to take her to the Emergency vet hospital. They found out she had an inflamed uterus and had immediate surgery to take it out, she stayed at the hospital overnight. In the morning we picked her up and brought her over to our regular vet for observation, she looked much better, but when we picked her up from the regular vet about 8 hours later they told us she hadn't eaten any food or drunk any water, they also said she looked depressed all day (but when she saw us she was wagging her tail and looked happy). We took her home for a few hours, wouldn't eat or drink anything, and was continually panting (which is suppose to mean she's in pain? or has a fever?) so we took her back to the emergeny hospital for IV pain medication and fluids. I called this morning, Saturday, and they said she's doing much better, but she's still not taking in food or water orally. And they want her to stay the whole weekend.

Is this normal?

*my dog is pretty picky, shy, and she's never been away from home before, she also has to be coaxed to use new bowls to drink water. I'm worried that she's so stressed out being at new places with unrecognizable faces.

Gee,,,,, I guess that they can regulate her and make sure she gets her liquid and nourishment that she needs and that is good,,,but on the other hand,,, I wonder if she wouldn't do better at home with the ones that she loves, especially if she is shy and all.. But pyometra is very serious.. so you want to make sure she gets better and if they think they can do a better job then you................................

I am sorry your furchild has to spend the weekend in at the vets. I wouldn't worry too much about not eating or drinking cause they are using IV fluids so she will not be dehydrated and that is a good thing. Missing a few meals probably will not hurt her any either. Although they have paste that is high caloried and probably will give that to her. My vet uses stuff called Nutri-Cal.

Thanks for the replies; I'm not too worried that she's not getting hydrated/hungry since she does have the IVs, but I was wondering if it was normal after post op that they don't eat or drink water for 4+ days?

Very normal, many dogs have to be force fed after something like that. Think about it like how you would feel after a major surgery or even when you are sick. The dog just doesn't feel like eating right now. Many dog with a pyo don't even make it throught surgery when it is that bad. Imagin a gapfrute sized balloon in her belly area and that is what was taken out except it was full of puss (worse thing I've ever smelled in my life). That had to be painfull. So glad she made it through.

Thanks for the answer Xebby. It's been about 3 days since her surgery, the nurses say she's doing much better although she isn't eating yet.

Edit // they said she wasn't eating so I went there to see if I could try to feed her. She immediately ate and drank water when I went in, so she's home now. Thanks so much to everyone for their answers/comments ^^
