    Hot spot tips

My 7 yo cocker has his second hot spot in the four years I've had him. He's *never* had a flea that we've found or scratched or chewed. He seems perfectly comfortable now.

About two days ago my DW brought my attention to some bumpy little scabs on  Dylan's head. He was recently groomed and his cocker head is shaved quite close. I felt the bumps but I didn't see anything.

Tonight to my surprise, he has a weeping raw patch the size of a nickel there. The last time we had this, I used a solution of grapefruit seed extract on the site several times a day for several days. It cleared up in about 10 days and we haven't had one since.

Seeing as how this is new to me, I'm wondering how those of you handle occasional hot spots, as opposed to those on a dog with other skin, coat, parasite, low immunity, etc. problems handle them.

Standard diet is rotating raw meaty poultry bones, ground raw beef, turkey and lamb, about 25% hq kibble (innova, tw, etc.) with daily fish oil and Wysong biotic supplements as appropriate.

Was at the vet two months ago for check up and was good to go.

    Thanks,
    Ron

Clip hair around spot so it doesn't stick to the spot, clean with peroxide a few times a day, and when the area is dry, put on Gold Bond Powder to stop itching and to dry it out.

You can also mix a few drops of tea tree oil and water and spray or dab it onto the spot.  It will sooth and cleanse the pores out.  If it seems to be bothering him you can give benadryl to stop him from fooling with it.  I believe the dosage is 1-2 mg per pound of body weight.

Clean with Peroxide of Hydrogen then the old faithful, pink Calamine lotion to stop the itching.

Thank you all for the commonsensical tips. But the darndest thing . . . I doused the weeping spot with grapefruit seed extract a number of times since my first post and now the spot looks normal.

    A weird 24 hour reaction?

    I'm stumped.
