Ear wont stand .... any advise ????

I have a Mini Pin with one ear that stands and the other one folds over.  She has been cropped but the ear never stood.

She is my baby so if the ear stands... great if not that is fine too.  I would like it to stand.  If anyone has any advise on how to get it to stand .... please let me know.

I have tried taping it with a rolled up paper towel .... but when I take the post out the ear just falls over.

Anyone with advise - that would be greatly appreciated... Thanks

you can try retaping them again... depending on how old the crop is i suppose.  do not rub or mess with them to much that way...that can weaken the cartlidge

How old is she now and when did you start taping the ear?  That will make a huge difference in how successful you are in getting that ear to stay up.

Sometimes it can take weeks, even months of taping a dog's ear(s) before the cartilage strengthens and it stays that way.
You can also try a glucosamine/chondroitin supplement like Cosequin DS while you are taping the ears to help strengthen the cartilage.

Is this a puppy?  During puppydom, calcium is diverted from the muscular system to the skeletal system.  Puppies ears will stand and fold many times.  Add a tiny bit of yogurt or cottage cheese to the feed.  The additional calcium will do wonders.

I have always wondered why it is so important to have a dog who's ears stand in the right place. I can understand for show, but don't you breed a dog to get as close the standard anyway? Just my thouhgt, not ment to start an argument.

I would just take the advice from above and if it stands great if not be happy with your little min pin. It really depends on age and the parent dogs, maybe if you can contact the breeder and find out what they do for their dogs then go from there.

very true but a min pin is born with folded ears and cropped to stand.  meaning it could be a poor crop, wasn't taped long enough or the cartlidge in that ear is not as strong.

i should have also added that a tampon (of course the smaller the better with a little breed) work very good as a base for the taping :)

Me neither, Amanda. [:D] Maybe that's because Max's ears are rarely both going in the same direction - but they do pop up when he lies down.

There are lots of places online that carry it- you can try a google search.
Also, most vets carry this and it's over-the-counter.  It's mostly used for arthritic pets because it helps to build cartilage.
