    looking for a good clipper

Hi!  I am the proud owner of a bichon and wheaton terrier.  I have a friend who grooms for a living, so I learned how to clip the dogs on my own... by using his expensive clippers.  I purchased a pair on my own, Andis - PM-1 Pet Clipper.. and they were horrible.  I'm willing to spend some money...  but not over$100 (and my friend is only able to recommend the really expensive ones. ah!)
My bichon's coat is very very thick... so I'm looking for something that will last.  Any suggestions?

    -Sarah

If your not willing/able to spend over $100, then you should take them to the groomer, otherwise your money is just wasted.

You are going to find that none of the "cheap" clippers are much good, especially when the dog is heavy coated. The results you get are only going to be as good as the tools you use.

I recommend Laube clippers. We use them exclusivly at the shop where I work and there is NO COMPARISON with any of the other professional clippers on the market. Granted, they are more expensive, but they are SO worth it. I promise, you won't be sorry you "invested" in them.

You can check them out here. I can say that the Laube Speed Feed is supposed to be very good, but I have not used that one. We use the Mini Micro.

You can get an Andis 2 speed, with a #10 blade, for $110 (free shipping) from upco.com

Hi, I prefer my andis cordless but the 2 speed Andis for $110 is great if you invest now and are only grooming your one dog you will have that clipper for years.

Cordless would probably be fantastic for home use. Do you use one professionally, Suzzz123? How long does the battery last?

Wahl KM-2 clippers work very well and only cost about $110.00.  I've used them for a couple of years now and haven't had any problems.  One word of warning though....most clippers come with a 10 blade. DO NOT use this blade to cut your dog down. It is very short!  That blade is what groomers usually use to do the sanitary area of the dog.  You would also have to invest in new blades.  Ask your groomer friend what size blades were used.  What kind of clippers did the groomer use?

a note about Wahl clippers though. Wahl blades will only fit wahl clippers. With Andis and Oster blades/clippers they are interchangable.

You are definally right. Buying clippers is a big waste of time in my opinion! besides.... most of us aren't talented with the clippers except for you pro groomers out there so if you do the math:

-your getting a better clipping for cheaper and and you don't have to do all the work yourself!

-just thought i'd throw my 2 cents in!

I guess that would depend on which Wahl blades and clippers you have. We use Wahl, Laube, and Oster blades with our Laube clippers and don't have any problems (except with the quality of the blades themselves). Most of the professional blades manufactured for standard clippers are interchangable. Now there are some specialty clippers that the blades DON"T interchange.

Well I bought some of the less expensive clippers before... and my poor doggy looked like I gave her a haircut while blindfolded.  I did find another use for the clippers tho... I used it on my husband's head LOL  Needless to say, I'm not allowed to clip either of them anymore.

The major difference in clippers is the moter. the cheeper ones are magnet driven. The $100+ are gear driven. If you want a clippers that will last you will have to get a gear driven kind and you will also have to buy the blade lengths you want to use.  It is an investment I know but you have to compare the cost and results of doing it your self or having it done professionally. Good luck

sad thing is... all of that happened the first few months we were married and trying to 'save' money.  He thought it would be cool if I cut his hair instead of paying for it... he paid for it alright! hehehe  If you only heard his voice when he said 'omg i can see my scalp'.  [:D]

    Haha!
I groom my dog myself. In the begining Maggie got some weird cuts, but now I have it down and she looks ok. My friend has a spaniel and right now they are learning how to groom their dog. It is definatly an experiance.[;)]

In all honesty buy the best quality of clipper you can afford.  The cheaper ones tend to overheat, are very loud and vibrate a lot...plus have a tendency to dull quickly or not cut hair altogether.  I don't like Wahl products to be honest, I found their motors to loud and the vibrations upsetting to dogs.  Anything less than $100 dollars on clippers is a waste of money.

I don't have a dog any longer, but I used to groom her myself.  But, I used to groom professionally.  The quality of the clipper and blades is essential.  You'll also need to become familiar with blade sizes, haircut styles, ect.  It's not impossible to do at home and learn yourself, but your dog may look a little funny at first.
