    Cavalier King Charles Spaniel grooming

    Hi,

Just wondering if any Cavi owners get their dogs occasionally clipped?

I know it's definitely frowned upon in the show ring, but on a practical level for the domestic owner, I find I can't take my dog for a walk in the park without his picking up every single grass seed on the way and returning all knotted up!

When his feet hair gets too long he can't grip on our polished floorboards. He'll try and sit but will be constantly sliding backwards!

While I don't own a Cav. myself, I knew several people that did and they did clip the fur on the paws.  Everywhere else, they kept it the way it was.  But if you're not showing, it's really up to you.

I have a Papillon, and I trim under his feet and around his "potty" areas to keep him clean.  If he's fairly clean and dry, most of the junk in the yard tends to fall off or can be easily brushed out (moss is the big culprit here).

Depending how long his coat is, I'm sure you can probably ask for a puppy cut/summer cut at your local groomers or if you're just looking to trim the paws, you can probably do those yourself.  Just make sure you get some good quality trimming shears or I personally like the Wahl pencil trimmer.

I use a good semi fine stainless comb for my Ch. Cavalier, he gets a comb through most days. I do trim the under part of his feet and also trim around his feet if he is not being shown for several weeks. His nails / claws get trimmed most weeks. No trimming is allowed when showing.
I wouldn't trim any of his coat, it will ruin it for over a year or trim his ears for that matter.

My dog goes everywhere with us, beach, bush (forest) & town. The amount of twigs and other items picked up in his coat are easily combed out. I really can't understand anyone buying a beautiful coated dog then clipping the coat off.
    All the best

I have heard that they do recommend trimming the hair on the undersides of their paws.  I love their furry feet!!  Otherwise, all I do is regular brushing and bathing.

I couldn't agree more.  We are strongly thinking about a summer clip because we live in Texas and he is very hot and uncomfortable.  Does anyone know how long it takes for their coat to grow back out?

Also, is there a photo of a clipped Cavalier online somewhere?

I have a 4 yr old Cavalier King Charles and started having him trimmed last year. The first response I got from a groomer was "Why do you want to have him clipped?  But like the originator of this thread, my Buster picked up everything from his long coat. I don't get him shaved close. I only have them tidy up the rear area so he doesn't get poop over him when he goes potty, and trim around his tummy area to trim away the long excess hair and a even out the hair around his neck area and paws. He looks really good and much more comfortable. since he isn't a show dog i feel it okay.

Hello, I do shave a couple of cavaliers here in IL one because she is very old and has potty issues and the other because they like it. I use a 5F blade all over and it turns out adorable short all over no furnishing they walk her alot in the woods and she hates getting brushed out it makes them both very happy they can drag in alot of debris from the outdoors.  Alot of the Cavaliers I do have the furnishings trimmed very short which looks just as nice I usually trim the skirt, butt, and front legs to about an 1 1/2 inches and trim the chest hair up a little to blend the feet get trimmed really tight and short very neat and tidy. She will still look like a Cavalier no matter what you do so dont worry and do what makes you both happy unless hes a show dog dont sweat it. Have a good summer.
