    Liver Problems

Our 12 year Shi-poo, who weighs 10# and is losing weight. She was diagnosed with high liver enzymes (1st test 850 & 6 weeks later it was 550) & has all the symptoms of having hepatic encephalopathy (per the vet), she is currently on Denamarin & lactulose as well as on a low/no protein diet, currently feeding her Hills I/D Heptatic health food. She is hungry but won't eat either the I/D or (I've tried the Dodds diet), I have to spice it up with a small amount of hamburger. Any suggestions out there as to what else I could give her to get her to eat the I/D or the Dodds? Any other suggestions you have would be greatly appreciated...thank you

Lots of things going on here and honestly Denamarin is good but it's not nearly enough.  I would add actual milk thistle and SAM-e to what you are giving (you can't give 'more' of Denamarin because it is a pharmaceutical but you can add milk thistle and SAM-e safely).

Lactulose is good -- and *more* of it if you can tolerate having her take it.  It  brings the liver toxins down out of the brain so it will help her to not feel so nauseus.  You may have to syringe feed her if she won't eat.

You might try just plain no-salt green beans -- dogs often like them for some strange reason and it would help with the hunger.  But you have to get the liver numbers down and you have to help the liver function better (which is why denamarin alone is just plain not enough here).

My email is callieatcritturs@yahoo.com -- and I can send you info on milk thistle and SAM-e that will help you a great deal.

The other thing -- get a full copy of her bloodwork from the vet.  There are **four** liver values, not one and you need to know what is and isn't elevated (which will help figure out what actually is causing the high liver values to start with -- has the vet addressed that??).  But you need to know which of the liver values are elevated  to know what else to add that will be helpful./
