My dogs appetite is till poor a week after spaying.

Hello, I am a new member looking for some insight from other members who have had a similar experience. My wife and adopted a previous stray dog who we thought was about 4 years old. She was Lyme positive when we adopted her and was on antibiotics. We brought her in for her spay and the pre-surgery blood work showed she had kidney disease most likely caused by the Lyme. We put the spay on hold and after a stay in the hospital for fluid therapy and a diet change at home to Hills K/D her creatine level dropped from 3.1 to 2.0 (normal is 0.6-1.8). The vet advised that we admit her the night before surgery for fluid therapy prior to surgery which we did. The surgery went fine although the Dr. said that her uterus was friable and that probably meant she was older than the suspected 4 years old. probably between 6-8 yrs. When we picked her up she was having bloody diarrhea from the stress. the vet prescribed Flagyl as a precaution. It has been a week and her stools are normal again and she is urinating fine but her appetite still hasn't really come back. She turns her nose up at her prescription diet which she loved prior to surgery. She will eat chicken but that is about it. We contacted the vet and brought her back because we suspected her kidney levels spiked causing her to feel nauseous. The first test showed it had spiked to 2.6 but retested today and it was back to the baseline of 2.0. Long story short I was just curious if anyone has experienced anything similar with their dogs. My wife and I are wondering if it could be hormonal due to the spay or if the effects of the anesthesia are still affecting her? Is it just a waiting game? Any advice would be appreciated.

    Hi

Hang in there, she has been through a lot, she may just not feel well yet and may take time to get her appetite back. There is a product out there called Nutri-Cal its good for dogs or cats that won't eat it is very high in nutrients and can help stimulate them to eat more. Just read the directions well as it goes by weight. Can you walk her? Getting her moving can help a lot, but I want to make sure she is well enough to walk first. Maybe find a good soft food and mix it in with her regular food that has helped me in the past with tough cases. I have fostered dogs for many years and many have had all sorts of issues that kept them from eating. Please keep me posted, I'm hoping that as she improves and feels better she'll get that appetite back.

Thanks for the reply! She is well enough to walk and seems to enjoy her walks very much! She just seems so disinterested with food for some reason? I will try the Nutri-cal.

Great, that is a good supplement until they start eating again. I would also try beef or chicken broth drizzled over her food, I had a few fosters that loved it and it got them back on track. Keep me posted.
