    Dry skin

My pitbull boxer mix has dry skin ( I'm guessing) on his head. Is there a home remedy? He's been diagnosed with mange but he has healed from that. I don't know what to do and these vet bills are getting expensive! Suggestions please!!

    Hi,

Sounds like a cute pup. Boxer-Pitties are very cool. Dry skin is a common issue I hear about all the time. A lot of it could have to do with diet. My first Rottie had mange as well and she was a mess took awhile to get her coat back to normal. You have to make sure they have plenty of moisture in their diet. What I find works best is a mix of dry and soft along with oils, like Safflower Oil and Coconut Oil. I've use Safflower with great success. About 2 tablespoons a day, its great for their coat, it has vitamin E and anti-oxidants too. Coconut also is great for their skin, I have several friends who use it and love it. You can also add eggs to your dog food, sardines are great it's good to mix up the proteins when you can. Whatever you are feeding now add soft and some oils to it. It may take a few weeks but you will start to see a difference. I hope this helps. Please keep me posted.

Fish oil and vitamin E were always what I see recommended for dry skin.  I think they body uses vitamin E to process the fish oil so you should give both.

I tried if for my dogs, and it seemed to help the one, but the beagle would refuse to eat her food if it had the fish oil on it, so we stopped.

It would be unusual to have just "dry skin" in one place ... what does the skin itself look like?

When you say "mange" I assume you're saying demodectic mange?  How old is he?  Neutered?  (yeah, there's actually a purpose in my asking that).

How long has the skin been dry?  any change with the seasons?

Are you seeing skin flakes?  big flakes? small flakes?  Any scratching?

    Pictures would be helpful.
