Home remedies for cracked/sore paw pad?

Ruby has been licking and nibbling at one of her back paws.  When she finally sat still long enough for us to get a look at it, we saw a very raw spot between her "main" pad and one of her "toe pads."

It was hard to get an up-close look, but there doesn't seem to be anything like a thorn or sliver in there.  It just looks like a raw, open spot (made worse when she licks/chews it or does zoomies).  We've been putting an OTC antibiotic cream on it -- not very successfully, because she wiggles too much.  Also, she tries to lick it off right away.

Any suggestions for something more natural we can try before we decide a vet visit is needed?  I think I remember reading in Whole Dog Journal once that raw organic honey has antibiotic properties.  Has anyone had good luck with that, or something else?  If she's going to lick it, I'd prefer it be a safer substance on there!

Hi, sometimes dogs lick their paws if there is circulation trouble too, I'm not saything that's the problem but I would see a vet if she is at it that much. She may need something more that a vet can give, like an anti-inflmatory or maybe even a powder to help heal it, I know sometimes things need to dry rather than use a cream. I hope this helps a little, please keep me posted.

Tracy, if you haven't already, check into info about lick granulomas. It's not a cure; rather it could be the problem when it doesn't seem to be a thorn or other issue but is ongoing (open sore spot that she keeps licking).

I don't know anything about the honey - I probably read that before but can't remember right now.

Please give her some gentle belly rubs from me. Smile

    Belly rubs delivered, Tina!

I didn't think about the fact that something dry would probably be a good idea, since moisture only encourages bacterial growth.  Maybe I'll check with our favorite pet supply shop to see if they have something to try.  They've got a great selection of items beyond the standard stuff.

My neighbor's dog has had lick granulomas on her front legs -- not a fun thing to deal with.  She's a very anxious dog who also has a lot of allergies, so that makes her more susceptible, I think.  Fingers crossed that's not what's going on with Ruby!

Thankfully, she's not licking it too much -- although I can't see what she's doing when we're at work.  But periodically in the evening when she's lounging around, she'll fuss with it.  If it goes on for another few days, it'll be a week or so since we noticed it.  A vet visit may be in our future next week.

It doesn't sound like lick granuloma.  Be thankful.  I've had quite a few dogs with scrapes to their pads like you describe and the method I found worked best is to wrap the foot with vet wrap so she can't lick.  If she won't keep the wrap on, it's the cone of shame.

Tracy I highly recommend a vet visit.  Not that it is the same thing Hot Shot has but his started with something causing him to lick and ended with Staph.  It has been an ordeal to say the least but tips and tricks from Callie, gauze wrap and vet wrap and a sock has kept him from licking and helped me keep it clean.

Tracy, how is Ruby doing with her paw pad?

Thanks for asking, Jackie.  It seems to be doing better -- what's left of the irritated-looking part looks more like a bit of a scab.  She's not licking it much now, so that's helping, too.

We averted an increase in the problem last night:  Ruby had been in the backyard with DH while he was watering some flowers, and she did a few zoomies.  She came in the house and tracked what I thought was some wet dirt on the floor (she was running through the wet flower beds), but upon wiping it up, I realized it was poop!  We're very diligent about picking up her poop immediately after she goes, but once in a while she goes when we have our backs turned and we miss it.  So, she ran through a fairly fresh pile on her zoomie route.  Thankfully, the offending paw was NOT the one with the boo-boo!  Talk about adding more risk of bacteria.  She then had to suffer through a thorough outdoor foot bath for all 4 paws.  Ugh!

Anyway, I think it's on the way to clearing up, so we'll avoid a vet visit for the time being!

I'm glad to hear it's healing.   We clean our yard thoroughly too before we let the dogs out for the same reason.  Sometimes we'll miss a pile  :(  I love not having carpet anymore.
