What suggestions are out there for having a good time and not destroying my backyard?

I'd rather have happy dogs than a beautiful back yard.

We've had to accept that only our front yard is pretty.  The backyard is a zoomie track, and other than urine-stained grass and some very sturdy shrubs and perennials around the perimeter, there's not much fancy stuff going on.

If your yard is really large, is there a way you could block off one area for them?  My friend used some basic metal posts and chicken wire to fence one section of her yard for her dogs to romp -- the grass just ended up dying in that area, and the rest of the yard looked nice.

If your dogs are digging, I've heard people have good luck if they make a designated dig area, like a raised flower bed or kid's sandbox area with railroad ties and dirt in a big square.
