Ruby tested positive for Giardia!! (tacran)

Ruby had her annual vet check-up on Saturday, and we left a stool sample because it had been a year since they checked it.

We just got word from the vet and were shocked to hear that she tested positive for Giardia.  She has NO symptoms:  her stool is very normal (we call it "tootsie-roll-like";), and other than a bout of severe diarrhea a few months ago (it cleared up in 24 hours), we've not seen any indications of an infection.  Once in a while (every couple weeks or so), she'll have softer stool (usually has grass blades in it), and even less frequently than that, she'll puke up some bile and grass blades (this time of year, she really likes the fresh grass that's newly sprouting).  I'm guessing she got it from eating some other animal's poop when we walk in an empty lot near our house (although we try to watch her like a hawk, she has eaten deer poop).

The vet said that since she's not showing symptoms, her body is probably fighting it okay on her own, and so she's not advising treatment.  She would begin treatment if we notice any vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, etc.

I've got to do some research now because we never experienced this with Tonka, but does anyone have any input or thoughts about what we should do, where she could've contracted it, what the risks are to ourselves, other human and dog friends she interacts with, etc.?  Yikes - this freaked me out!

Tracy, here is a link to some info from the CDC. http://www.cdc.gov/parasites/giardia/giardia-and-pets.html

Tootsie rolls will never have the same appeal again.  LOL

I've had several pups over the years with it.  They had diarrhea which led to a vet visit and treatment.  Don't freak out.  lol

I have no info to share, but I'm sending good vibes for you and Ruby.

Giardia can come and go -- so if it flares up you can probably get something for it easily.

You might want to get a bottle of liquid chlorophyll if she's craving grass.  You can add just a few drops (like 5 or 10) to her food and see if that settles her down.  Any health store carries it -- it's good for humans and dogs.

Sending good vibes! Hope Ruby is feeling better soon!

Thanks, all.  Ruby is feeling fine . . . which is so odd, since you'd think she'd have some kind of symptoms.

Tina, I was reading all that CDC info last night, and I started to feel as though we had to treat the house as if we had a lice infestation.  I'm imagining little giardia all over the carpet, bedding, furniture, etc. -- because we let Ruby sit and lie down wherever she wants to.  I know we track in all kinds of nasty stuff on our shoes every single day, and we do yard work with our hands in the dirt all the time, but something having official word that she's got this and that she's shedding it is so gross.

Not sure what more we can do besides steam clean our carpets, because I'm already pretty diligent about other housework/cleaning, washing her blankets every single week, bowls every single day, etc.

Oh well, I'll try not to fret and just avoid letting her lick me anywhere near the face! Thanks for the chlorophyll tip, Callie.  I'll look into that!

I didn't mean to freak you out, Tracy! Like Jackie said, I wouldn't freak out. We are probably more resilient than we think. Or I just live in denial. What we don't know can't hurt us, right?

Tina, it wasn't your fault I was freaking out -- that's just my lovely natural way of behaving when faced with any type of unusual issue, whether it 's truly a crisis or not.

In a way, the internet has been a bad thing for someone like me -- I start doing research and the next thing I know, I'm in a panic because I'm certain I'm dying of a rare disease or something!  Tongue Tied So, I tend to agree with your thought about what we don't know not hurting us.  Ignorance really can be bliss!
