For those of you who know your dog's geneology, what would be the chance that my dog would have the same issue as her brother? I have just found out that Buffy's brother has been found with a huge abdominal mass and his condition is grave (he is a champion show Basset). I am getting concerned because at her last Vet visit, Buffy's abdomen was obviously tender and Doc told me to keep an eye on her, which of course I did. She is acting and eating just fine, so I haven't worried about it until now. She isn't due to go back to the Vet until May, and I might ask him to do some Xrays, but should I do it sooner? She will be 11 in May...

I probably would do the xray a bit early, I admit that lumps worry me (Bugsy has a ton and each one makes me nervous)

Marty, I don't blame you for worrying. Does Buffy's brother have hemangiosarcoma? The cases I've heard of seem to involve abdominal masses that create grave conditions. I don't know anything about canine genealogy, but it makes sense that some medical things can run in a "family," just like with humans.

I think I'd err on the side of caution and have an X-ray now, just in case. Actually, would a mass like that show on an X-ray, or would an ultrasound be required? Either way, finding something sooner rather than later would be good. Keep us posted on both pups.

I'm in agreement -- I'd do the x-ray early. It's not going to cost more to do it now and the peace of mind may be worth it. Good luck!! I am so sorry to hear Buffy's brother has this.
