Cleaning eyes and ears?

    Cleaning eyes and ears?

How should I clean the eyes and ears on my dog?  What should I use?

I use a wet soft cloth to clean the inside of his ears.  For his eye goop i usually just pick it off when it's dried out.

To clean my dog's ears ( which I didn't do at all really, till my puppy got an ear infection so I had to clean her ears for a while) I got an ear cleaning solution from my Vet, but I'm sure you can buy it somewhere ( Pet store maybe) cheaper than getting it at the Vet. So I pour the stuff into her ears up to the top, and then rub her ears to work it all in. Then let the dog shake it's head and wipe it out with a cotton ball ( not a Q-tip). You shouldn't have to do this more than once every one or two weeks, I don't think, unless the dog has really dirty or infected ears. I've never had to clean the dogs eyes....not sure what you mean by that.

I use warm, wet washcloths.  They are gentle, and non invasive for ears and you control exactly where you clean.  Jules

If your dog has floppy ears, it would best to use an ear cleaner rather than a wet washcloth.  Leaving the ear moist will invite an infection.

For cleaning ears, I soak a cotton ball with ear cleaner (many brands are available from supply stores), and use my thumb to gently start low and wipe upward to the ear leather. The excess ear cleaner runs down into the ear, so I massage it around a bit and follow up with the same motion using a dry cotton ball to absorb the excess ear cleaner.

For cleaning eyes, I do it while the dog is wet and still in my tub. I use a flea comb and start just below the bottom eyelid and comb down toward the dogs nose. This pulls out all the eye goop. Rinse the area well to wash out anything that didn't come out with the comb. Once the face is dry, you can use a product like "Diamond Eye" to remove any staining commonly found on white dogs. Just put the product on a cotton ball and carefully wipe it over the stained area. I find it to be easiest just to keep the hair clipped very short just below the eye which reduces any staining. If you dog has facial wrinkles (like bull dogs) be sure to rinse between the wrinkles and dry them well.

I use witch hazel on a small piece of paper towel and wipe carefully in the ear.

Ditto on what LoveMyDogCassidy said...I did the same thing when the Vet said, "Have you cleaned his ears?" I was like "What? Clean his ears?" He taught me the same way she said to do it!

As for "Eye goobies." We wipe them out every morning with a warm washcloth, but I have used eye wipes from the pet store too...they are suppose to do well with tear stains.

I use an ear cleaner - usually F&S Ear Clens or EpiOtic.
For nasty eye gookies, I just wipe it away.

For maintenance, we use a few drops of lavender essential oil and witchhazel in the grooming salon to clean ears. My friend makes a product that we sell in our store with sweet almond oil and lavender that also works great. Halo pet products has a wonderful ear wash and eyewash that our holistic vet highly recommends if your dog is prone to dirty ears or eye gunk.
