Quercetin

    Quercetin

Hi Everyone.... Gibby is having a time with fall allergies again this year...last year hardly at all but this year is hard.  Worry about constantly giving him Benadryl.  It was suggested to me to get him Quercetin.   So went on a mission and outside of the Internet could only find Natrol brand but if I give him the 500 mgs suggested...it will give him 1000 mgs of Vit. C. Not sure I like that..  So went to GNC and they had it but their has calcium..and I know I don't want that. Then went to a health food store that is close and they had Twin Labs ( I think ) and it had Vit. C also.      One person said she uses Solaray..so figured I would order it but then I see they are advertizing theirs as NON - CITRUS and I do believe the others do have citrus. EEKS...so I need help. Anyone know about it?

    Thanks in advance!

First off -- Dyan, I'm 59 and I've taken 75+ mg of benedryl every day of my life since I was abou 3 -- and I've had dogs on it their entire lives.  It's really not a problem.

I know some forks take Quercitin -- it never helped me but I think it's pretty individual

Why are you so concerned about the Vit C?  Dogs can take C well -- my question would be is it an herbal C or is it ascorbic acid type of C?  Now too much ascorbic acid C will change the acidity of his urine -- but an herbal won't.  (ascorbic acid is the only "C" that keeps it's acidity all the way thru the body).

Hi Callie!  The C in Natrol Quercetin is ascorbic acid.   I give Gibby some Vit C...just not liking the 1000 mgs.   I know I have read a few times that you should not give Vit. C to a dog... but don't remember why.  Gibby had a high urine PH...that will probably make it higher......right?

Hi Dyan.  Vitamin C is ascorbic acid.  It won't hurt Gibby.  Dogs produce Vitamin C but supplementing won't hurt them.  Might cause diarrhea if too much is given, just like with people.

I wouldn't worry about that amount for a dog Gibby's size.   I hope the Quercetin helps but I agree with Callie about the safety of Benadryl but if you worry about using it long term why not ask your Vet's advice?

Good luck.  Having an itchy miserable dog is tough.  Been there myself with my little Twister.

Hi Jackie. thanks for answering also.

I have been giving my twice a day morning and evening so its spaced out and not causing problems....I often give him 500 mgs a day anyway...this is adding another 500 mgs.  Its not causing him problem spaced apart anyway.

About Benadryl, at 1 mg per pound, he should be taking probably 5 at a time x 2.   That is 10 a day..... buy a 24 pk and its 2 1/2 days worth.  That just doesn't sit right with me honestly.  In fact...as much as I have told clients at the clinic that I workes at " 1 mg per pound " my vet says  " you can give him 2 or 3 a day."  I am not totally sure how much the 3 I am giving him works.  The people on Canine Health forum won't use it for whatever reason...not even asking them why because these are pretty much all " not vaccinations whatsoever" and " raw only" people... but they are the ones that told me about Quercetin and I looked it up...sounds pretty interesting.

I was hoping that someone here might have given it to their dog and could tell me about their experiences.

On a side note...my AOL acct will not let me come to this forum no matter what I do..I have contacted dog.com, my computer guy, several people...   I have figured I can get on in Chrome though....but if this is a new format..I'm not navigating very well thru it.  It used to be so easy and fun. :(

I found this older thread.  Do your remember jennie?  She was and maybe still is a dog groomer.  Her comments are in this thread.  She's on FB if you want to look her up.

Thanks Jackie...I sure do remember JennieC...is she still using the same name on FB?  I see a few of you guys on FB and try to answer or acknowlege my old friends...but there is NO PLACE like this forum...and I miss being here and the people.  Thing is I belong to a few Great Dane Groups and they take up a lot of SPACE...so I miss a lot from others.    You know I fought to NOT do FB and now I can't do much of anything because my new computer making it so hard for me.

I see JennieC used the Quercetin...and the Solaray besides.  Maybe I will look her up on FB.

Honey has been on Benadryl daily for almost 4 1/2 years now because of that Mast Cell Tumor that was removed from her leg.  We hae not had a problem at all with it..  Allergies are NOT FUN.  My KayCee had several that would end up in hot spots if we were didn't catch them soon enough.  She had a lot of Benadryl in her life as well.  tho for some reason as she got older, her allergies were not as bad.  Usually I think it is reverse.

Wow Sandra...your saying that Benadryl was the reason for Honeys Mast Cell Tumor?  I did get the Quercetin and have been giving it to Gibby..not sure if its doing anything or not.... yesterday is the first day I did not give him any Benadryl and at 3:30 AM I hear him laying in his bed and licking. That said....not sure if it was his feet he was licking or what...he licks a lot when he wakes up in the middle of the night and not sure if he does it to put himself back to sleep or what. I just got up and covered him up ( its a dane thing...lol ) and he stopped. BUT wow.... some say Benadryl is fine and you think it caused Honey a problem.  EEKS!

Dyan, mast cell tumors release histamines.  Dogs are often given Benadryl before and after surgery to remove those type of tumors and kept on an antihistamine, long term.  I think you misread Sandra's post.

Your right JackieG...big time misread. Thanks.....wow, didn't know that.    I have been giving Gibby the Quercetin twice a day and the jury is still out.  Haven't given him Benadryl for days now and he is kind of licking here or there but not too much and often not at all. Since he likes to lick anyway...hard to tell. One thing..he was doing really good for a couple of days and then Sunday started licking again and Monday a bunch..I was upset and trying to figure anything different...and guess what....on Sat evening I plugged in a plug in from Bed Bath and Beyond..................so Monday I took it back out...he didn't lick at all during the day and I was really wowed...but then at night he started again a little.  When he stops...I'm going to experiment with the plug in.   Oh...IF she stops.

I didn't want you thinking you'd been hurting Gibby with the Benadryl.  It really seems to be fairly harmless.

    Hope the Quercetin helps Gibby.

Thanks JackieG.... after all these years of giving my dogs Benadryl..I wasn't worried....just don't like the every day long term......I don't like every day, long term of anything. LOL! Thanks again!
