    14yr old terrier has brain tumor

    Anyone out there can tell me how long my dog can live with a brain tumor? She is still eating but having a hard time going to the bathroom when I take her out. She has really gotten disorentated she also has cushings and vestilbul disease.

    I'm so sorry to hear of your dog's tumor and the other problems.  It's not possible for anyone on the internet to have any idea how long your dog will live. Has your vet given you any kind of prognosis?  It's often hard to predict, even for a vet,  how long a dog will live with any serious condition.  So much depends on the treatment available, owner compliance with treatment and the over all health and age of the dog.  I hope whatever time you have remaining with her is good and filled with what she enjoys, as much as possible.

    I'm so very sorry.

    I think that they key is not how long, but how well.  When life is no longer a joy for her, it's time to help her go to the Rainbow Bridge.  It's a gut wretching decision to make, but it's an act of the purest love.

     I am sorry to read all the health issues your doggie has to cope with.

    Vestibular disease is short term, the worst of it usually passes within 2 weeks.  See how she does once she is over that.

     I agree you have to go by what the vet indicates, and her quality of life.

    Yea I agree as long as she can function, able to get up and go out I'm not going to put her down. Only when I see she is not able to have a descent functioning life will I let her go.She will show me, she has lived a very long good life14 yrs. My last terrier I put down at 11 yrs. I'll get another one and begin again with a new buddy.

      Not in this case, since the vestibular disease is caused by the tumor.

    The vestibular started back in Dec went away and then she had another epiosode on Sept. 10th.This one she has not fully recovered from and the tumor and vestibular have the same symptoms.Gave her antibiotics they thought it might be inner ear infection but she still has the symptoms.

      Last November, Jessie had a vestibular incident; rapid eye movement, head tilt, trouble keeping her balance. We saw a neurologist at a vet teaching hospital and he said her central nervous system was involved ( different from old dog vestibular disease) and she likely had a brain tumor. They did an MRI and it was normal ( no tumor). She did well for seven months and then had another incident, and then two more, one every four weeks. Through testing, they found out she is hypercoagulable and she was having strokes. They were caused by high blood pressure and some other factors. She is on blood pressure medicine and Plavix and hasn't had a stroke for 10 weeks;

      I hope you don't mind me asking, but how was the brain tumor diagnosed? Has her blood pressure been checked?

    Sorry to hear about that. I also have a dog with a brain tumor. She is a 11 year old rat terrier. Her condition was so bad. She would not eat. She forgot everything. Could not walk up two steps. Its like she forgot. She would be lost in our own house not knowing where to go. She would fall or lay down and not get up. Three days ago my Vet gave her presnidone. It was like a miracle. She is back to old self. Eating and even running to greet everyone. So happy. I know this is not a forever fix since I know they cannot be on it long term. But I will take anything and everyday and embrace it like a gift. This drug is a anti inflammatory and pain reliever. It is also a steroids but is known to shrink some tumors in dogs. I know it has side effects but all we are seeing is she drinks more. But that's okay since she now has energy to go outside. We were really expecting the worst and feared that she would die. But this has helped her. I don't know for how long but as long as she is happy and can function I will take it.

    Yea Ally is doing better she's eating and has energy again. She's going outside so I can walk her. She does sleep alot but that's o.k. as long as she's able to get up and move around which she can right now.

     That's good news; is she getting different medications to help?
