    Honey Had A Dental

Honey had a dental Monday.  Because of her age--pyshing 11 if not there already--I am reluctant to have her put under unless 110% necessary.  Also, she has horrible hallucinations when coming around after being put under, much worse than most dogs.  I have spent hours on the floor there holding her down when she was coming around following a dental or sugerty.  However, she had not had a dental in about 4 years and we also thought she had a cracked tooth.  We just felt we didn't have a choice.

Well, as alwasy before I hae a dog put under, we had a complete blood workup done.  She had had that bout of to high protien and then ph out of whack back in jan-march.  But this time the only thing off was her cholesterol was just a tad high.  Everything else was great.

My vet prefers to put dogs over the age of 8 on IV during dentals and I said if he thought it best, that was the way to go.  So I paid the exra for thhat.  He uses as light an knock out as possible with er (I think he actually does that will all dogs).  Well, she came thru the dental just fine and no cracked tooth.  She did have some gingivitis and is on anitibiotcs for 10 days.

Of course she had not had any food or water after midnight and was a little upset at not having breakfast.  We got her there at 7:00 and her dental was done about 9:30 and we got to pick her up at 3:30--he wanted to make sure she would not have problems.  Anyway, we got her home and the first thing she did was run to her feeding station to see if she had food.  But before we picked her up I had put her kibble in her pan and added a good amount of water to really soften it up.  I always give them "mushy" food for a couple of days following a dental and if a tooth is pulled (tho Buck is the only one to have had to have a tooth pulled and he lost 2) I puree the food so it is lapable for a few days.

But Honey came thru it just fine, is busy chasing squirrels, begging for treats, and should probably never have to have another dental.

Glad to hear that went so well and that there wasn't a cracked tooth! Extra belly rubs from me. Now, take care of those pesky squirrels, Honey!
