Rupert woke up with an owie :(

Rupert woke up with an owie :(

Very early this morning Rupert got out of bed (with me) and went to sleep on the couch with DH (he snores :/  ), which is kind of unusual. When the kids woke up (after I got up, showered, and went downstairs to work), Rupert jumped off the couch and DH said he immediately tucked his tail and cowered, as if he'd been scolded (which we vary rarely do, he is nearly perfect afterall.) He started shivering and wanted to go downstairs where I was. DH let him down (past the baby gate) and I noticed he was acting kind of clingy. I let him out; he peed and came back in. He was still acting like he wanted something, so we went upstairs because I thought he was hungry and wanted breakfast.

I had thought that maybe he had a belly ache; he usually gets the shivers and is clingy when he doesn't feel well. But DH tried to pet him and he yelped a tiny bit. I pet him very gently all over, and we think that his lower back near his tail is where it hurts. He's lying on his bed right now. He just got up and circled and laid down again and let out a tiny whine.

Do you think I should bring him in to the vet? He is able to walk around fine and go up and down stairs. Do you think he just pulled something? Or could it be something more serious like a slipped disc? I really have no idea what I should do. He's usually a very healthy doggie.

I know this isn't good news but yes, he needs to go to the vet -- this could be an injury but it could also be indicative of him just plain being sick or having a problem.  The fact that it's persisted for a bit and he's acting so out of character is warranty enough to have the vet check it out.

I'd probably wait 24 hours and rest him.  I'm the first in the vet's office if a dog is sick or hurt but I generally don't go in on day one of a problem unless it's something that obviously needs prompt vet attention.

ETA  Give him some kisses from me.

I'd concur. I would keep him quiet and probably give him some buffered aspirin too. Sounds almost like cold tail but he is docked so...perhaps he has a bit of a pinched nerve from sleeping wrong. But I would wait a day and see if it were me, barring any major decline.

I wait and try to keep the Kangaroo calm and on 'bed rest' to let stuff heal.  He could have just landed wrong getting off the sofa, it is so hard to tell.

I agree with the others. I would wait 24 hrs and see how he is. If we were heading into the weekend the I might take him in just to avoid an emergency vet call but since we have all week, I would wait and see how he does with rest.

Thanks for the input, everyone. DH & I decided to wait until the morning. Rupert's getting around fine and has been relaxing all day. After nap time, I took the kids and went to the Y, then we went to my mom's for dinner. So he's had plenty of stress-free relax time. It's not that he doesn't like the kids, but he doesn't trust Sonja yet so he's a little more on guard when she's around. If she's bothering him he'll just go in the bedroom.

How's Rupert this morning ??  All better I hope !!

Coming in a little late here.  I'm thinking the same thing as Gina- he could have pinched a nerve or twisted his back a little.  Hope the Rupe Man is feeling better today!

I'm not sure. He just got his lazy bones out of bed, temporarily. Smile

He just came downstairs to say hi, and he stretched, which I didn't see him do at all yesterday. He laid on his bed and I pet him. I gently rubbed his lower back and he didn't have any reaction. However, he has not shaken out yet... he flipped his head and flopped his ears a little, but not a full on shake. I let him out, he peed, then came back in and went back upstairs to lay on the couch with DH. The kids are still sleeping.

It sounds like he's on the mend. Jessie has had cold tail twice; both times she whined softly when the vet put pressure on her spine just in front of her tail. It only lasted a day or 2. I hope he's back to normal soon; Jessie sends belly rubs.

     Poor Rupie!!! (just seeing this)

It does sound like its a spine/tail thing which could have been due to sleeping awkwardly. I hope he's doing better by now, pleaze give him some kisses and a belly rub from me!

If you can get some you might try some Traumeel - there is a cream and tablets. I crush the tablets and put them on cottage cheese or yogurt and B licks it off. It is a holistic and very safe anti-inflammatory that really works

Thanks everyone. Belly rubs and kissies delivered!

Karen, I'm going to have to get some of that to keep on hand.

He seems to be doing much better today. Not 100%, but acting a lot more normal.

very glad to hear he's doing better!!!!! Yes

I was fairly skeptical re the Traumeel but I use it whenever B seems to be feeling the knee a bit more than usual and he always seems better and sleeps better. I've tried it myself and it works. I buy it from Amazon. Locally its available at Whole Foods but its cheaper to order from Amazon

Glad to read he is on the mend!
