    sloppy poo post-op (kpwlee)

Well this morning two days post-op he had a poo - very normal then slop

Just had another cow pie (it is very soft but not liquid), gave him pumpkin and he's always getting live plain yogurt

Is this a normal thing after an op?  he did not have this after the TPLO, once he started pooping it was normal

He is on Clindamycin as an anti-biotic so I am guessing may be it is from that although it doesn't list it

Should I be concerned or just wait and see until tomorrow

Karen, it could be the antibiotic, the Rimydal, the stress, the after-effect of anaethesia, or simply because it is so freaking hot.  If it were me, I'd give it til the morning, unless you are seeing blood in the stool or he is getting dehydrated.

Absolutely agree with the above...give it some time.  Lots going on inside that Beastie belly.

thanks ladies that was what I was thinking (but I admit to being very tired and unsure of my thinking LOL)

Clindamyacin is a VERY strong pennecillin type drug -- it will do exactly that.  A probiotic would be helpful -- just give it two hours "off" from the antibiotic.  Partly it's that it's killing the 'good' bacteria (clindamycin is an anaerobic drug - kills bacteria that doesn't require oxygen to live so it can majorly target gut bacteria), but it's just plain strong stuff and gut problems are just plain typical.

However -- also consider this.  He does *not* need to "strain" at all.  Now diarrhea can make its own kind of straining (if the peristalsis in the intestinal tract keeps spasming), but at the same time you don't want the boy to have the opposite problem and put any strain on those stitches.

If you use something to stop the diarrhea I'd talk to the vet -- it would be *me* to use something more like pepto bismol rather than anything stronger because you don't want him to get too bound up.  If you have the caplets you can give him one safely.  (Billy at 30 pounds took 1/2 a caplet frequently -- but it's a broad dose range).  Do make sure you keep the vet in the loop -- Foxy could not take clindamycin at all -- he really couldn't tolerate it gut-wise at all.  Don't be surprised if it simply continues as long as he's on the drug -- which is why I said keep the vet in the loop.  The benefits of it may outweigh the side-effects and the vet will instruct you on how to continue.

Give him Traumeel -- it will help reduce the inflammation in the gut as well as in his boo boo.  (she's used that in the past with him)

Good luck -- I'm so sorry, hon -- you've already been thru the mill this week. *hugs*

Our vet recommended we avoid Pepto as it contains salicylate which is used in aspirin and can cause some of the same side effects.

Yes, you're right -- Pepto does have a small amount of anti-inflammatory in it.  But Immodium, as an anti-spasmodic can cause other side effects (it can easily make it so they can't use the muscles TO go - all depends on the individual body using it).  I can't take Immodium at all myself for that reason and so I tend not to use it on the dogs, and Pepto is the one my vet and I have arrived at.  But that's why I stressed so much for her to get her vet in on this.  Given how close the surgery is to those anal muscles I would want the vet involved in anything beyond tonight.
