Canine Diabetes - Lost weight and satisfying appetite

    Hiya folks,

My 12 YO Lab, Ursa, was diagnosed with Type 1 a few months ago. She had lost about 30# and I'm having a difficult time satisfying her appetite without sending her BG skyrocketing (it's already made her blind and she was going deaf before this even started). I'm using high-quality puppy food, which several vet sites said was sufficient, and am adding vegetables and brown rice. This holds her for a few hours, but when it is still a few hours before her next meal she parks herself at her food bowl and waits. As you can imagine, this is difficult to see happening. Has anyone found a way to handle the appetite and maybe even put some of the pounds back on? Everything I've read addresses the need for the dog to lose weight, but other than a vague "high-calorie dog food" I can't find anything concrete.

Try liver treats (lightly pan fry liver in olive oil and cool totally -- cut in bits and bake on a slow 175 degree oven for like 2 hours on a cookie sheet with Olive Oil Pam liberally sprayed on

If you can find Terra Chips -- those - particularly the sweet potato ones -- may provide some needed crunch.

Try making yogurt popsicles -- dilute good quality fruited yogurt way down -- or you can use meat baby food and/or veggie baby food -- dilute them and freeze in cubes -- good crunch and it makes them feel like they've had something.

Green beans -- particularly no salt added if you have to use canned.
