After getting spayed?..

    After getting spayed?..

My sister just recently got her first dog. She adopted it from the animal shelter two days ago.. and for what she paid, that included getting her spayed, microchipped, heartworm test, shots, etc.

Anyways, she brought her home yesterday and they didn't give her any pain medication for the dog - which I found strange.. but considering it's been years since my dogs have been neutered, I can't remember how that works. She tried calling the vet and they told her they would give her a call back, which they never did. I haven't seen the dog myself, but my sister says she is shaking a bit and won't eat much. I assume she is just plain nervous and scared, and also in pain. I told her to give the dog a few more days. However now she is saying it's kind of like she is gagging a little (not vomiting or thowing up food) so I was wondering if this could be related to the surgery or if she should contact her vet tomorrow?

I just had my dog spayed Monday.  They didn't give her any pain medication to take home either.  They said they gave her enough medication that it last up to 24hrs after the surgery.  Maybe that's what they did for her dog.  They also said it would be normal if the dog didn't eat for 24hrs after surgery. As for the shaking I'm not sure but the dog is in a new environment and may be nervous so that may be causing the shaking.  Either way I'd call again and tell them what's going on.

To be honest it's really BETTER not to have pain meds.

If the dog gets pain meds, they can wind up feeling a little TOO good which can make them too prone to play or be way less careful than they need.

Honestly with a dog, it's sometimes BETTER if they have a bit of pain -- it acts as a natural deterrent (I won't do THIS because it hurts!).  They NEED to be a bit sedentary and heal for a few days (a week is best).

That sounds hard-hearted but it tends to be a longer and better vision -- because you don't want them romping around (not stretching that incision).

If you want to do a little to help them cope -- try making some chamomile tea pretty strong.  Let it steep til cold.  Add both the tea AND the wet herbs to their next meal.  You can add a bit of broth to make it appealing but often they will just lick it up (not bad tasting),  It's a good anti-inflammatory but won't upset the tummy (in fact it may SETTLE the tummy -- even if you use a baby syringe and just park the tip of the medicine syringe behind the canine tooth -- hold the mouth loosely shut and slowly squirt it in so the dog can swallow.  It's VERY settling to the tummy!

Good luck -- both of you!!
