Biking with smaller dogs?

    Biking with smaller dogs?

    Hello all.

It's been quite awhile! Classes are really zapping my time, and internet is one of the things suffering because of it lol.

I have a few questions about endurance and distance for biking with smaller dogs.

I had been riding about eighteen miles a day alone, then sadly I stepped in a hole that was filled in with grass and suprised attacked me. Didn't even see it tell my foot sunk in and turned under me. It wasn't broke, but has taken a full month for me to be able to get back to normal. I started riding again slowly, around two or three miles at a time. I brought 'Lo with me, and she loved it so much I kept letting her come with me even as I started going farther. We've gotten up to four / five miles.

Normally our speed is about half half between slow runs and steady trots. I do have to make her trot a lot of the time, she still wants to run and lets me know with lots of looks. I also make her rest at least twice, but she just stands at the end of her leash breathing evenly lol.

She is going to be two years old this February. She is thirteen inches square, fourteen pounds, lean and strong. She has high drive, and always wants to go no matter what. My sister also brings her yorkie Sophie on some rides as well, and she is carried in a bag some of the time because of her size. She is five pounds, eleven inches square and fit.

So, the questions! (If you can, please answer for both 'Lo and Sophie)

Is there a limit to the miles they should be allowed to go?
Should we let them pick the speed?
Do they need breaks, or is it (within reason) only necessary if they want them?

Also interested in hearing about other bikers that take their dogs, distance they go, speed ect.
    Thanks! :)

I would not run a dog under 2 that far, period. I am extra cautious, though, having lived with a whole series of dogs with orthopedic issues. A fully grown (filled out, growth plates closed, mature) dog with good structure (confirmed by x rays, not just a physical exam).... I would run that far. Puppies get just "play" around here. Walkies stay under 2 miles, while they're young, and I don't run them.

That's why I thought I should post, I've only had dogs for three years and got a lot more to learn lol. I know going just by her idea of far enough wasn't good enough. I always make her turn before she wants to, but was still unsure.

She is full grown, but no x-rays. How far do you think is safe for her at her age?

I don't consider a dog under 2 years of age to be full grown. My Crested (who is roughly the same size, 14" tall, longer than tall, and 13 lbs) is 2 1/2, and recently gained 1/2 lb of lean body mass. Her ribs show, from all positions, and her hip bones are VERY close to the surface, so it isn't fat.

I wouldn't run her at all, wouldn't walk her over 2 miles a day. That is my super cautious opinion.

Ok, I'll be more cautious then too. Over the last few days 'Lo's been getting fast walks, like I used to. Walking is so slow compared to biking! But, it is safer, and then D'Art actually wants to come lol.
