    Help please!

My friend brought up her dog and asked me if she thought he needed to go to the vet.

I think it might be a bee/wasp sting but not really sure. He's been biting at it so obviously it's very itchy. She said he was fine this morning but came in from a potty break and he had this. He let me touch it no problems(he will let you know if he hurts so I know it wasnt painful). It's hard around the outside of the bump but the bump is soft. It's right by his stubby tail.

It looks bad enough to go in if she can.   Has the dog been given any Benedryl?

Under his tail, to the side? How's he smell? Looks like it could be an abcessed anal gland, in which case, YES, he needs a vet, and as soon as possible.

    Yep.

That was the first thing I did Jennie! Lol. My friend asked me what the heck I was doing. Told her I was seeing if it might be his anal glad but no stinky smell at all.

It's 9:30 here and she has no babysitter this late and I cant go up there to watch her kids because mine is in bed and they all have school tomorrow.

She only has extra strength benedryl. He's only 4lbs.

I was only thinking Benedryl if it was a bite of some kind.  But, it does look like an abscessed anal gland.  I'd be worried about it bursting.  Buddy dealt with an abcess...there was no smell.  But it was bad.

ETA:  If she can't take him in tonight, maybe try a warm compress to ease the discomfort.  Put a cone on him.  Take him first thing in the morning.

Ok thanks. I will tell her. She loves him very much and is ready to take him to the vet right now.

It's possible, too, that it hasn't ruptured, yet. Definitely a first thing vet appointment, and a cone for the night, if she has one.

A 4 lb dog can have 1/2 a kids' benedryll. Do you have any around in liquid? 1/2 teaspoon will be enough, in case it *is* a bite.

She put some benedryl cream on him and he's leaving it alone now. Must not taste good.

I called the vet and he said it could wait till tomorrow. Hmm I said even if it's an anal gland. He said yes.

I'm curious - what did this turn out to be?
    • Gold Top Dog

It was a bee/wasp sting. He's all better now.

Good to know, just in case... I'm glad he's better now - looks really uncomfortable!!
