His nails of stone are killing my dremel

I use a stone on Cleo with no issue. I would also give some thought to doing them after the nails have been wet for a while, either from a bath, rain outside or swimming. Water does soften them and make things a lot easier.

Seriously thanks for the input - any particular stone attachment that you use?

I wouldn't begin to know what to call it...but mine looks alot like the sanding drums but it's solid. I think it's maybe the "grinding" attachment?

I have heard that the stones produce more heat, so the sanding drums are preferred. What grit do you use? I recommend the medium, 60 grit. Takes the nail down faster than the 120 grit. I think that the finer the surface, the more heat is produced. The slower progress also tempts one to use pressure to hurry things along.

Are you pressing down? You should not have to apply any pressure, let the speed of the dremel do the work. Maybe a higher speed on the dremel would help.

I've never had this happen in many years of dremel use. Are your bands getting damp? Do you have really high humidity? Or maybe it's just a defective batch of sanding drums...

I am not pressing down but I am in North Carolina and exiting summer which is very hot and typically humid.

Bugsy is a very large dog - likely dane and gsp mix (or some boxer or some hound..... you get the idea) and he has incredibly fast growing, large, hard nails.  In order to keep them in check I need to dremel them 2-3x a week taking at least 1/4 inch off each time.  I have used both 60 and 120 grit, not sure what the above are.  I'll probably go buy some new 60 grit bands and see if it is the batch that I have

Karen, make sure that you aren't over tightening the sanding bands.  I've had some come apart in a similar fashion when DH has replaced the band.  After watching him tighten, & tighten, & tighten some more on the last band, which split immediately, I came to the conclusion that it wasn't the dog's nails, or the dremmel, but it was DH's "help" that was causing the problem.

Maybe a higher speed on the dremel would help.

Higher speeds also produce, more friction which = more heat...so six of one....

Cleo never minds the stone, but she is really good about her feet.
