I have heard that the stones produce more heat, so the sanding drums are preferred. What grit do you use? I recommend the medium, 60 grit. Takes the nail down faster than the 120 grit. I think that the finer the surface, the more heat is produced. The slower progress also tempts one to use pressure to hurry things along.
Are you pressing down? You should not have to apply any pressure, let the speed of the dremel do the work. Maybe a higher speed on the dremel would help.
I've never had this happen in many years of dremel use. Are your bands getting damp? Do you have really high humidity? Or maybe it's just a defective batch of sanding drums...
