Broken toe + splint on basenji/JRT - advice?

Our 15-month basenji/JRT broke his toe and the vet put on a splint (bandages to be replaced every week for four weeks). He sounds like a little trotting horse when he's moving around. He's still jumping on the bed, running after squirrels, and standing up on his back legs for treats (broken toe is on back right leg). I'm wonder if we should restrict his movements in any way - too much strain on his other limbs? Usually we walk him each day for 40+ minutes, he's at all-day playgroup once/week, we go to the dog park once/week. I'm planning to skip playgroup/dog park since he's not as agile (in case of a dispute) and I don't want the bandages to get really dirty/wet. Anyone else have experience/advice with this?

Generally, breaks mean restricted activity.  ie..crate rest.

I would speak with the vet to confirm this, but I would keep him confined.  No running, jumping, nothing.  Leash walks to go out to eliminate, but no formal walks.  While the splint helps keep the bones stable & aligned, he needs rest to allow for the bones to heal.  If he's active & bounding around, the bones are still able to shift around even with the splint.  Confinement, & limited activity are imperative for proper healing.

Good luck, I hope that your boy heals quickly.

thanks for your help! I called the vet to confirm, and, yes, we are supposed to be restricting his activity. sigh. he's such a busy puppy. no more trips to the backyard when the squirrels are out. I guess this gives me more time to workout since he won't get daily walks.

Interactive toys like kongs, buster cubes, & everlasting treat balls are your friend!!!  Big Smile  They will help keep him mentally stimulated, & help burn off some energy while he has to stay calm.

Yes, a broken toe=rest. I didn't restrict my springer's activity enough at first when she broke a toe on her front foot and it extended her recovery time and we had to resplint with a more study one. (I thought I was keeping her quiet enough by helping her on and off the couch. Nope--still impacted the broken toe. We did only short potty walks. No springing; no jumping on/off beds, couches, chairs;  etc. Amanda's list of smart toys is a great place to start!

ETA: Once she healed, she was good to go. No problems with it for the rest of her life.

thanks for the reminder about toys. he's never been too interested in the traditional Kong (doesn't like peanut butter and cheese squeezes out pretty easily), but I'll get a few new ones. I'm mostly worried about him going stir crazy when we're both at work for 7+ hours (2-3 days/week). He goes to the vet Thursday for his first checkup, so we'll see how bad it is since we let him bounce around too much the first few days.

Peanut butter and cheese seriously limit the Kong. You can put ANYTHING in there. My favorite is a meal's worth of kibble, a spoonful of yogurt/cheese/peanut butter/canned/squish, and frozen overnight. Takes them an hour to eat breakfast!

This is a BIG hit at our house --[http://www.kongcompany.com/userguides/stffABallUserGuide.html] The 'Genius' line is slowly becoming a favorite, too, now that my un-geniuses have figured them out.
