FURminator vs. Shedzilla

    FURminator vs. Shedzilla

I had an opportunity to use the Furminator and WOW . . . it did wonders on my dog's coat.  "WOW" was also my reaction to the price Indifferent.  The shedzilla, looks like a very similar tool, but it cost half as much.  Has anyone compared the two?  Or tried one or the other?  Is the FURminator worth twice the price of the Shedzilla?

I received the Furminator as a gift from my Mom a few Christmases back. She can't stand shedding animals in her house so it was her kind way of telling me to do something about Gizmo's shedding.

Well, it didn't work so well on Gizmo's short but heavy coat. I even looked up the video on the correct way to use the Furminator but Gizmo has such a thick top coat and sort baby fuzz of an undercoat that is didn't pick it up so well.

What I found to work even better then any "as-seen-on TV" product was a "shedding blade" recommended to me by a groomer. They are sold for large animals at feed stores but work wonders on a dog's coat and are a price that is far easier to handle. Gizmo likes to be brushed with it and will come up to me when she sees the thing in my hands. She turns her butt towards me and give me the look like "I'm ready mom, brush away".

The brush looks like this and cost around $5:

Like Xebby, the Furminator doesn't work well on one of my dogs' coats and so we found a much cheaper solution.  My preferred grooming tool is a fine greyhound comb or flea comb (both have metal teeth set close together) - it does a fabulous job of pulling out undercoat without damaging the guard hairs.

Yea it really depends on what type of coat the dog has. I have a FURbuster(similar design to the FURminator) and it works great on Bailey's coat, but not so much on Jack's coat(medium-long haired spaniel mix).

Ive never used a FURminator... but I saw the FURbuster at Wal-Mart and grabbed it cause it looked the same and was cheap, and it actually works really well.

I am excited to hear that some of the other varieties do in fact work.   My vet let me try their FURminator and I was so excited because it worked really well on Rugby's coat (which gets brushed all the time, but the hair just WON'T come off grrrrrr!).

Thanks for the flea comb and other ideas as well, they are certainly worth a go.

If I am going to spend that kind of money,,  it will be a mars coat king every time.

On my aussies I use a rake like this.

I use the furminator on Buddy, it does a great job on his coat.  I prefer using a simple rake like above for Bruder and Heidi.  Followed by a regular doggie brush.

I use the furminator on Charlie and it does an excellent job.  I haven't tried the others though.  When I got it, it was the only thing like it on the market.

The FURminator works on Crusher, but not on Onyx. I have to use a shedding comb on her, even the rake did nothing.

My sister borrowed our FURminator and loved it so of course she went out and bought the cheap version. She really likes it, and better yet, hers has a replaceable blade. Mine has a couple bent teeth from being dropped and that would be a really nice feature.

We used it on our Elkhounds when I was a kid, too (back in the '70s).  I've found a Zoom Groom (or a rubber curry comb) works wonderfully on our Lab, followed by a grehound comb then a stiff bristled  horse brush.

I have a Furbuster, similar to the Furminator but a lot cheaper.. it works great.

I use the furminator, and I love it. I think it is definitely worth the price, but to me it looks just like a lice brush so I wonder if one of those would get the same results.
