    Exercise after spaying? (Chelsea)

The yet-to-be-named psycho dog, with the shortest "honeymoon period" EVER, got spayed a week ago today, but she needs some serious EXERCISE!! before we both go crazy. She doesn't have external stitches, so I'm trying to figure out how I know when she can really exercise without splitting internal stitches or whatever. Anyone have any idea?

Lots of training and exercise are very very very necessary.. I'm kind of questioning my sanity, lol.

The general rule with all of my girls has been to confine them for 10 days.

Treat dispensing toys, & lots of liquor are usually the two things that keep me sane during those 10 days....

how does her incision look? we recommend confinement for 7-10 days, typically.

I sympathize. We had to confine Ari for 10 days. It was not fun. At. All. Ari couldn't contain herself at all, so she spent the vast majority of her time in a crate. I agree with Amanda, treat dispensing toys (Kongs came in handy) and liquor for you are the way to go. I really thought Ari and the humans were seriously going to lose it.

Maybe just a very slow, on leash walk? Food dispensing toys are always a great thing for entertaining them... maybe freeze a stuffed kong and give it to her in her crate?

dogs like humans need exercise to heal it gets the immune system going. Get her walking she will heal faster.

Oh, hmm, the shelter told me leash walks were okay within a few days, so I've been walking her... I'm wondering when she can start running her crazy little brains out, lol. Playing with other dogs, fetching, playing frisbee, etc. Now that I think about it, probably not til she's over her kennel cough too, huh? Although exercising doesn't really seem to exacerbate her coughing, so I don't know if that's true... Which brings me to another question, are they really still contagious for months after kennel cough? I can't keep her separated from other animals for that long...two weeks is long enough. :-/ Oh, Erica, her incison looks really good I think. It was swollen the first few days, but it's not anymore. The area around it does seem to...protrude a bit? Is that normal? It's not warm or red or anything, and she has no issue with me touching it, so I don't think it's infected or anything, it just..sticks out?

it's normal if they used skin glue to close it - which most shelters do.

I'm bad, and don't follow directions... my pups were running around like idiots the day after their spay. I couldn't deal with 3 pent up crazy pups. *shrug*
