    Retching advice

Hello Everyone, I have a German Shepherd cross. He is 12 years old. I have to say I have been very lucky not to have had any medical problems with him throughout his life but in the past year he has developed arthitis despite being a very very active dog. Tomorrow I am taking him to vets and would like to pick your brains before hand so I don't get any shocks. Duke has always prefered dry food to mixed or just meat and has had that throughout his life but he started unproductive retching, sometimes he is sick, other times he gags for a while which looks very uncomfortable for him, then does a massive retch. Because of this I changed his food to pure meat, I thought it would be softer on his throat if he has throat problems. This did help for a while but he has started again. It's not everyday say one every couple of day's. When he goes for a run in the field sometimes he will eat the wheat which also starts him off. Today when he played football with me he barked and that started him retching. He has a contantly runny nose too. Please has anyone got any idea's what this could be?

    Thank you.

Maybe it's kennel cough.  Even vaccinated dogs can get it occasionally, from a different strain of bacteria than the vaccine addresses, and it often causes retching in addition to runny nose.

Is it possible he's eaten a foxtail?
