Sandy gave me quite the heartattack yesterday

Sandy and I went for a walk yesterday and when we got home, Sandy snagged something off the front porch. I reached for a treat to trade her and she swallowed it.

Fast forward 2 hours, Sandy's cuddled up to me, getting ready for a nap when she start rocking. Not shivering but full body rocking back and forth.  In my half dozed state, I just pulled her closer and tried to keep her steady. 5 minutes later she starts coughing and gagging. Run outside and down the stairs, she pukes up white foam and refuses to move. She just stood there rocking.  Now I'm fully awake and minorlly freaking out. I went down and reached to pick her up. As my hand went over head, she flinched so bad that she almost curled up into a ball. It was almost like my hand moved to fast for her.

Picked her up and brought her in. I called my roommate up and asked him to take a look. Since he's the walking medical book. Lol.  We both thought the same thing. We figured that she ate one of my Emtec's.   Every movement we made had her freaking out. So I made up a crate for her in the living room with some water and she hid in there for a bit.  Whenever some one came by, she was aware enough to greet at the door. And she was able to do her butt wiggle dance when Alex came home.  About 5pm Alex and Lacey were able to get some food into her (a hot dog but meh). She slept most of the night (I didn't!)

This morning she's back to 100%. Her activity level is back to normal. She tackled Maze for the squeaky ball.

So lesson learned to me! Even thou I don't remember dropping any of my medication, I'll be keeping a better eye on all my pill bottles.

Oh man - if I'm seeing the right stuff on Google, that's acetaminaphen -- you should have made her throw up.  WATCH HER CAREFULLY -- even *one*acetaminaphen (that's the plain regular size Tylenol-type pill) can completely shut down the kidneys of a small dog.  Honestly, we are talking *damage* here, not just something passing.

Watch for excessive drinking, nausea, etc.  General "not feeling good" stuff.

I honestly can't stress to you how lethal acetaminaphen is to dogs.  Don't leave them on counters or tables where they can be knocked off - honestly I don't even carry Tylenol/acetaminaphen in my *purse* because of it.  I don't know the effects of the codeine offhand - that probably caused the initial weirdness, but it's the acetaminaphen that is so lethal

Looking back at it, I probably should have.  The entire house has been watching her today and she seems completely back to her self.  I have the next two days off so I'll be watching her close to see if anything changes.

I'm still wondering when I dropped it, or even if it was that. Cause seriously I haven't used them in a week. But better be safe then sorry. All my pill bottles are up higher and my co worker and I will be proofing her completely around medication as a permanent leave it.

As I type this, Sandy is burrowing in my sweater.. 100% fine.

Sounds scarey!  Glad she's doing better and not showing any kidney problem symptoms.

That would drive me crazy wondering what it was she ate!  :)

Nope. No signs of any under laying problems. Though she has decided a water from a tupperware container tastes better then her usual water dish. Lol. But she's just weird.

Trust me, it is driving me crazy!

Being the paranoid owner that I am, I'd probably be making an appointment with my vet for a basic blood panel to check liver and kidney levels just in case - damage may not show externally until things are too far gone, but if you catch it early often you can stop or reverse it.  Good luck!

Here is an article on acetaminophen:  http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?c=2+1677&aid=2226

Before you see signs of kidney failure 75% of the kidneys are already gone, so Sandy could have significant hidden damage.

    http://www.medicinenet.com/pets/dog-health/kidney_failure_in_dogs.htm

"As kidney function declines, the dog retains ammonia, nitrogen, acids, and other chemical wastes in her blood and tissues. This is called uremia. The degree of uremia is determined by measuring serum blood urea nitrogen (BUN), creatinine, and electrolytes."

"Dogs with kidney failure do not show signs of uremia until 75 percent of functioning kidney tissue is destroyed. Thus, a considerable amount of damage occurs before the signs are noticed."
