Bottom lip flap stinks...what can I do to clean?

Bottom lip flap stinks...what can I do to clean?

I've noticed that the bottom lip flap area of one of my dogs smells really rancid.  I've checked the teeth and everything else and came to the conclusion that it is the lower flap area of the lip.

My question is...what can I use that would clean the area really well?   ....other than water?  Is regular soap alright or is there something even better?  I'm not sure why it stinks but it has a "light greenish" stain type look to it.  Has anyone ever dealt with this?

    Thanks from Sadie & I.

I'm sure Callie will be along to help, and I really don't know what it could be in a dog, but if it were a horse I would immediately think it was a pus pocket about to abcess, or an infected tooth or something.  If you press on it is it painful?

Yeesh, Johnny, good luck with poor Sadie!

There's no pain that I can tell.  Just discoloration/staining and an awefull smell.  Smells kinda like she ate poop....but didn't!

Bad thing is she's the one that's always laying across my legs and kissing when she gets a chance!

Johnny, it's that and definately not her breath?  I'm just asking because I know in cats that if they get that smell like that from the mouth it can mean a kidney issue.  I'm not sure if that translates to dogs but thought I'd mention it.

Yep, pretty sure!  It goes away quite a bit when I clean the area with water but comes back within a couple days or so.

I was thinking maybe if I cleaned it with something other than water it might do the trick!

Externally a drop of tea tree oil on a Q-tip -- inside the mouth?

Got any gentian violet (like from the Blue Power Ear stuff?) -- that's an awesome fungicide -- it will stain the mouth purple but it kills fungal stuff like no tomorrow.

chamomile tea in an oral syringe -- it's an anti-inflammatory and will help sweeten the stomach.

It can also be drainage from the eustacian tubes (ears) -- that would be my biggest concern.

Great!  I've got some of each!  Gonna do this tomorrow morn to see if it helps.  So use the tea tree oil ONLY externally?  This is on her lip area....would it matter if she licked it?   How exactly do I use the gentian violet?  Do I mix it with water?  Just put it right in the mouth?

Just paint the gentian violet on with a q-tip or small brush -- straight from the bottle.  PURPLE mega mega mega ... but it will kill fungus.  They use it on babies with Thrush (no, you single fella you -- I don't expectyou to understand -- but Wikepedia it -- you'll get it *grin*)

Use the chamomile just to rinse the mouth later.

Tea tree won't poison her -- but it's majorly nasty tasting and anything more than a drop will make her a touch sick to her stomach.  But if you can find anything raw or open externally it's a darned good thing -- kills both bacteria and fungus.
