    problems with neuter

     On Wenesday I neutered both my males, they're mini poodles. Our family friend also went to neuter their yorkie mix. We went to the Humane Society, and now we're having some serious issues. The vet sent us home with two 25mg pain pills, they said to cut it in forths and give the dogs one piece each night to last four days. For some strange reason, they sent our friend's yorkie dog with 2 25mg pills of the same medication and told her to feed 1/2 of the pill daily for four days. When we picked up the dogs, the vet tech took a look at the incisions, when she looked at Ashton's incision she took him back so the vet could take a 2nd look. The vet said it was inflamed, but that it would be fine. I came home friday, checked out the insision, and it was even more inflamed and the incision was open. We tried calling, and like always, they don't answer their phones, and their voice mail boxes where full, so we just immedeatly took off to the humane society, a good 30-45 minute drive. When we arrived, a vet tech took a look right away and said it was only open a little (the entire incision was open) and that they would see me soon. After a long wait, the vet told me that they weren't going to glue it or stitch it, that they did two rows of stitches and he licked the first row out, so they sent him home with a cone. (Elizabethian or E-Collar) They didn't treat the incision or give me pain medication, I told them he looked like he was in pain, and they said to put some type of frozen vegetable on it if I wanted. My other dog (shadow) has diharreha, and they told me it was probably the stress, so I should feed him chicken and white rice. I've been doing all of this, and it's now saturday night. Both dogs loook like they're in severe pain. Shadow's (who still has diahreha) incision is starting to open too, and Ashton isn't doing much better. They dog's don't play or even walk around, they take af ew steps and sit down. Ashton keeps getting stuck on things with his e-collar, they are constantly sleeping or crying. My friend's yorkie mix is perfectly fine, he's 100% back to normal, and they didn't even bother giving him all his pain medication. They told us to come back if Ashton's not better in 7-10 days, but they're both in pain. I'll probably go by petco tomorrow to buy shadow an e-collar. They're in too much pain to wait another week, I can't stand to hear them crying all the time. I've tried putting ice on their incision, but they are extremely sensitive to the touch and jump if i touch anywhere around their testicles or incision. Since our friend's dog didn't even use his pain medication (I still don't understand why they gave her 2x as much, they're the same size) and my dogs are out, I'm going to give them each 1/2 a 25 mg. Has anyone else had this type of experience when neutering their dogs? Should I wait a week, or go back on Monday?

    The biggest cause of pain and swelling (and compromising the tissue around sutures, causing the incision to open) is licking. It's very, very important to prevent licking of surgery sites. They likely didn't want to close the incision again to prevent an infection, and are probably going to let it heal closed on its own.

    You could likely ask for pain meds to keep them comfortable in the meantime.  I'd put e-collars on both of them to prevent their getting to the incisions more.

     I'd probably put onesies on them, too. Is it possible that they're licking each other's incisions?

     I think I'd try another Vet! I hope they are back to normal very soon.

    Thanks for your responses;

    They've gotten worse.

    Shadow still has the diharreha, and now Ashton has severe vommiting and diharreha. The vomit doesn't resemble his food at all. Last night I took his cone off becuase he was vomitting inside of it, and I left it off for about half an hour, he began to lick his scabs off so I had to put it back on for the night. In the morning, I found vomit and diharreha everywhere- It was nightmarish. We tried feeding him some of his favorite foods in the morning, he didn't eat anything, he just sulked. Eventually we convinced him to take a small bite out of a saltine cracker. I took his cone off so I could wash the residual vomit from it, and he ran around the house trying to find somewhere where he could hide and lick his incision. I put the cone back on, and were going to take him back to the vet this afternoon.

     It sounds like they both might have infections - get them to a vet ASAP! I would go to another vet too, since the Humane Society sounds like they aren't real interested in dealing with post-surgery issues.

     FWIW in the future, you should always question is the doseage doesn't sound right. If the Yorkie was given a larger doseage than your dogs and they are similar in size, you should have asked why. Chances are one of you was given the wrong doseage info, so don't assume the the higher dose is ok for your dogs because it may not have been ok for your friend's dog either.

     I would ditch the HS vet and go to another.
