Beagle Nose. . . . .

    Beagle Nose. . . . .

I have 2 female beagles, they are 2 and a half years old. Bonnie, the larger of the 2 has been having some problem with her nose for a few months, it seems to peel, dry out, it looks almost bubbly. We have taken her into the vet numerous times and she doesnt seem to concerned, because she isnt losing color and it isnt getting any worse. We have tried everything and the vet recently gave her fish oil to put on her food and a topical steriod called Synotic to put on her nose. I am looking for any advice on different options as it does look a little painful.

I would get a second opinion.  If you think that it might be a problem, then it is, imo, smart to follow your instincts & have someone else look at it.

ABsolutely -- what Bevo said -- that doesn't sound good to me either.

Do you use plastic bowls?  That can cause nose problems at times.

Try the Vitamin E gel caps.  Poke a hole in one with a needle, squeeze some out on your finger and massage it on the nose.  Do this a couple times daily and in a couple days it *should* do the trick.  If it's still there after that then seek another opinion.

    Good luck.

I have a dog with a chronically dry nose.  My vet says it's similar to dry eye in people, that there's a gland that lubricates dogs' noses and that in some dogs it gets blocked or doesn't secrete the proper amount or ratio of lubricant.

I've found that if I'm diligent about keeping his nose moisturized that it stays in fairly good shape.  Of course, the worst time is in the winter with the dry, cold air.

I've tried the following products:  Vitamin E oil, Chapstick, Vaseline, Bag Balm, and Aquaphor lotion.  IME the Aquaphor works by far the best.  I usually apply it twice a day in the winter and once a day when the weather is warmer and more humid.  I've found that if I slack off it only takes a day or so for his nose to start looking worse again.  He does occasionally lick the Aquaphor just a bit, especially when he was first getting used to having gunk put on his nose, but I've not seen any side-effects.  I'd prefer to use something I know is safe like Vitamin E oil, but unfortunately it was totally useless in helping his poor dry nose.  I think that because it tasted good, he licked it all off, and the licking just made his nose that much drier.

Do keep in mind there are serious issues like Pemphigus that can affect a dog's nose.  So if regular moisturizing doesn't seem to help, I'd get a second opinion, preferably from a veterinary dermatologist.

I have been applying the steriod now every 12 hours for a little over a week, and she actually seems to show improvement! the inflamation seems to have subsided. hopefully this will be it! thanks for the advice! Has anyone else used bag balm? i have seen numerous post about it, and i thought maybe that would be better to apply to her nose inbetween the the vasoline i am now using. . . .the part of her nose that is dry isnt the tip, it is where the cushy black part meets the fur. . . .
