Interdigital cysts

    Interdigital cysts

A former member of the forum and good friend has a Westie that has an interdigital cyst. They've gone thru a few rounds of antibiotics and it hasn't seemed to have helped at all. If anyone knows more about these and the best way to treat them, I'd really love to share the info with her and help her out.

Is there just one or several?  Usually cephalexin is used for an extended period (4-8 weeks) as well as a topical antibiotic.  I'd go with the later of 8 weeks depending on where it is.  Chronic recurring cysts are usually due to inappropriate antibiotic therapy....not treating long enough/wrong dose/wrong drug.  Sometimes an aspirate can help to determine a drug of choice.

Is there a foreign body do you know or a reversed hair?

Have they been soaking the foot in warm water several time daily?  They could use an antibiotic solution (chlorhexidine) in hte water and afterwards could use wraps or bandages to keep the dog from licking it.

If all this fails surgical removal may be needed.

Thanks. I'm going to pass on what you said. I  know that she's been keeping it wrapped and I also know that they did a surgical exploration and flushing. I don't think it's been 8 weeks for the antibiotics though. They just switched to Medrol today, so maybe that'll help.
