Pain management on a dew claw

I can actually help with this one! 

When Willow did exact same thing I used the ointment called Neosporin +Pain relief and kept it wrapped until I saw the vet.

Maybe some camomile tea might help some.

Did she rip the *entire* nail off?  So there is no part of the nail cutting into it?  A toenail without a "nail" on it looks pretty much like a little pink worm!

That Neosporin + Pain is good stuff!   

If you have chamomile tea just make it strong and add to her food -- or add a bit of broth or honey to it.  ADD the wet herbs to her food as well.  It's a good mild nsaid.

No, she has a nubbin of nail...most of it came off in a bloody mess...there's maybe 2cm of nail left (and about 6cm came off)

That's why it hurts so much -- you will need to vet her for that then .... and they always BLEED freakin everywhere.  It's one of those things that bleeds profusely

Occasionally a dog can be sensitive to one of the ingredients (niacin I think) but it's pretty rare and the relief it can bring is worth watching it carefully when you apply it the first time.  It will prevent infection and reduce the pain at the same time.  It's not something to over use and after the vet sees it they'll probably say NOT to cover it.  But while you have that nail portion on there I seriously *would* cover it and have the vet look at it.

 I've used Neosporin + Pain Relief on three touchy dogs, with no bad results. Even super sensitive Emma was fine with it, and it DOES help, tremendously. I use it on Bean's delicate throat, when she scratches it on grass or collars or other dogs' teeth. Jewel hurt her foot, this week, and it got slathered and wrapped, while we were on the way to the vet. She's fine, now.

Dew claw injuries are awful. I hope she heals quickly, and it  doesn't happen again.

No, you could be right.  There is some talk about it being bad for cats.  But, for right now that she cannot lick it I wouldn't worry too much.  Willow is very sensitive and she did just fine with it.  If they have you leave it uncovered then I would check with them on what to put on it.  Willow had to keep hers covered though for a week I believe.  It wasn't getting any better without a wrap because she just kept licking it.
