    constant whining

My friend has a 14 year old dog that has started to constantly whine and pace.  She took her to the Vet and the Vet said she had hook worms and gave her a pill.  My friend was shocked about the hook worms, but thought the cause could be senility.  She seems in no pain as she can still run and jump up on things.  The Vet said that if it was just old age there is nothing that can be done about the whining.  Any ideas?

the only dog I knew that did that had some dementia,  she was also elderly. I think they have some treatments for that now but not sure how well they work. Perhaps get the dogs hearing and eyesight checked, and get them on a joint supplement in case they are achy or sore.

What testing was done, other than a fecal? To me, it sounds like they need a second opinion from another vet. They need to do bloodwork and a thyroid panel at the least.

To me whining and pacing would translate to pain. How long has she been doing that? Does she respond when talked to? Does she respond to requests, food, petting ... ?

My friend says her dogs tears through the yard and house about once a day (playfully).  She really doesn't think the dog is in pain.  She started giving her some calming medicine that she got on KV Vet and that seems to help.  The dog is just really restless and sometimes shakes and then the whining.  It seems to not be so bad at night when everyone is sleeping.  When the dog does sleep she is in a nice deep sleep.

Well, I believe that any marked change in behavior warrants being figured out. I wouldn't really subscribe to 'just restless and sometimes shaking and then whining". Shaking also could be sign of pain. It doesn't have to be constant pain, maybe it comes and goes. Intestinal cramps for example would come and go. Dogs also often 'forget' about the pain when they are excited or having fun.

Our Jasmine had similar episodes--panting and pacing. No whining. But we could see she was in some kind of distress.

I am glad the KV Vet is helping, but after all my experiences, I wouldn't rest until I knew exactly why this is happening. Whether the reason is psychological, neurological or physical, I believe it should not be overlooked.

One thing about dogs, they do not advertise when they are in pain. They often hide it quite well.
Here is an article on animals an pain on my vet's website:

Not trying to scare you, but from my experience, everything is something and nothing is nothing. Dogs cannot tell us what's bothering them, it's up to us to recognize it. Such change in behavior means something.

I'ld continue with the medicine and then if it still continues afterwards I'ld take her back to the vet for a full examination.

    Hope he gets better.

I agree with babelfish; if the dog hasn't had a thorough exam recently, including blood work, she needs one. At that age, each year is equivalent to four years in a human, so their health can change quickly.

Hi! Just wondering whether you're getting any improvement :-)

My friend is going to take her dog to a holistic Vet.  We'll see how it goes.

    • Gold Top Dog

That's a good start. They often see things modern medicine doesn't. Jasmine goes to a holistic vet and to Traditional Chinese Medicine vet as well. Good luck, let us know what they say.

I take it that means the whining and pacing didn't stop?

The pacing and whining continue.  My friend really thinks her dog as doggie dementia.  Anyway if the holistic vet is good with her I might give it a try with my dog and her constant colitis and bacteria that always overtake her.

It really doesn't sound like dementia to me from what had been described. But if the holistic vet is good, she should be able to figure it out whatever it is.

Yes, please, definitely do something with that. Your regular vet left it hanging? Shouldn't have.
