Does the redness right around the gumline go away eventually with chewing? Or, is that something that they need to do professionally?
Lori...I may be wrong but seriously...I believe the problems IS under the gum line. Just like humans. I don't think you are going to explain anything to your vet that he/she is going to like for that reason. Bubblegum used to get raw bones...and I used to occasionally give her the CET Chews....and her gums became red and swollen and she needed to be on antibiotics. I had to get her teeth cleaned. Now...I did not give her bones early enough in her life which I am trying to do with Gibson....nor did I maybe give her enough of them. And I am NOT for knocking the dog down for a dental. But I do believe that the problem IS under the gum line.
Just like myself. When I changed jobs from the embroidery shop to the vet...I kept putting going to the dentist aside. I didn't have any problems and I used to go during my lunch because it is down the street from the embroidery shop. When I got the job at the vet, its a 34-40 min. drive across town. Plus I was always off on Fridays...so is my vet. I just went to the vet in Nov. and am now going for whatever the procedure is to scrape under the gums. Believe me...no one brushes their teeth more than me AND uses dental floss.....at least 2 times a day. And yet...I have to get this scraping procedure done because as she said " I know you take care of your teeth really well but you can't get to the places that have to be cleaned!"
I do believe that is also true with our dogs. Perhaps if they chew bones before the tartar starts to build you can have a better chance....I hope so anyway.
