Went to the vet to get heartworm meds. They asked how much Max weighed and I said "26 lbs", so they gave me the 26-50lb size. Well...Max actually weighs 20lbs. Can I use a pill splitter and cut the tabs in two, thus turning a 6 month supply into 12?

I don't believe so. From what I've read the medicine isn't necessarily distributed evenly in the pills. So, cutting it in half doesn't necessarily mean that's half the dose if that makes sense.

Iverheart isn't evenly distributed throughout the pill, so no, don't do it.
I'd see if the vet will exchange it for the right size.

Honestly, this is just *my* opinion but I don't use HeartGuard nor Iverhart because they are now dosed SO low that they fail rather regularly. I would either use the pills as they are (and it's still dosed unbelievably low) or exchange for Interceptor, which fails far less often.

I haven't opened the box, but this business of the active ingredient being unevenly distributed worries me. If it is eneven within the pill, could it also be eneven from pill to pill?

Why worry or wonder if what you're doing is right. At least if you took it back and got the right meds your mind will be at ease.
This is something I'ld think about for days if I cut it and dosed it. I'm TOOOO much of a worry nut.
