Dog Clothes...Cool or Cruel

    • Gold Top Dog

Dogs wearing clothes doesn't bother me at all. I mean sure its a little silly some of the things people put on their dogs, but its their dog not mine Smile

I would agree with those about using clothes to keep those dogs warm or dry that need it but for any other purpose is cruel.

I do not have a problem with a neckerchief for a boy or bows for the girls but that is it.

I think dog coats are cute. But I think my dog would bite me if I tried to put a football t-shirt on her! lol

agreed.. aside from when the weather is bad the only other time ill dress up the dog is during the holidays like Halloween but only if i can find something that looks comfortable..

TJ my grand dog loves his sweaters and his coat when its cold outside.... he is so close to the ground he gets cold rather quickly..... dee has 4 different sweaters some warmer than others so it depends on the day...... my girls although they are bigger i think they were a bit jelous of tj and his sweaters so we did some tee shirts and tied them up in the back and they really liked them and now with it being cold and living in an older home we did the sweatshirts ($6. from walmart) and i custom fit them....this morning after going out they went right to there sweatshirts and wanted them on...... I told them that I hoped they relized that once it got warm that they wouldnt need them...... So i guess i am with the rest in saying if its necessary yes......

While I personally don't like doggie clothing for any other purpose than "as needed", some people really have a ball dressing up their dogs and the dogs often seem to enjoy it.  Sure, I'd raise an eyebrow if the dog looked miserable, but bottom line, so long as the dog isn't being made uncomfortable or actually ENJOYS the clothing, what's the big deal.

It isn't my thing, but, unless the dog is being harmed or made miserable, it certainly is NOT cruel.

What she said! I don't find clothing cruel, unless the dog is obviously miserable or being somehow harmed. Personally, I'm not a fan of dressing up a dog, outside of what might be necessary. My Mom's shih tzu has sweaters for winter, to keep the snow from sticking to her belly and forming snowballs, for instance. Eventually, I'll get off my butt and get Ari some boots, since those really bad cold snaps hurt her paws and she also hates getting snow in between her toes (even though she loves snow in general). I'll eventually get an orange reflective vest for Ari for safety and visibility reasons. Outside of that, I wouldn't just put clothing on Ari for the fun of it. She probably wouldn't find it fun.  Then again, maybe a little harmless clothing "torture" would be a hoot! I know of dogs that enjoy being dressed up, most likely because their humans are having such a good time of it!

I saw a cute shirt on a Shepard (might have been a Shepard mix) that said something along the lines of I'll kill you with kisses. I thought that was awesome. It made a dog with the potential of being misunderstood, look cute and harmless - and the dog got a lot of positive attention!

It depends...For me its about the clothes and the weather....It's situational...proper dressing up for dogs is not cruel...

My dogs are small and get cold very quickly so I do put sweaters on them size appropriate when they go out or else they would stand there and shiver. I dont put glasses or hats just sweaters.

But, if you DID put glasses or hats or whatever, and your dog didn't mind, then so what?

Dressing dogs is totally not my thing, but I'm not going to agree that it's cruel even if I think the poor dogs look silly as heck, UNLESS the dog seems to be miserable in those clothes.

The sun is so bright down here that I'm toying with the idea of getting doggles for my crew.

Jewel thinks her Santa hat is REAL IG FUN! I think I must have weird dogs. Emma didn't mind hats, either, and Bean has a pair of pink, Build A Bear sunglasses, and also a jeweled Halti that I used as part of a costume. They LOVE collars and get silly excited about "new" stuff. Jewel came this way, I didn't teach her, LOL.

I dont think it's cruel.  I think it's absolutely friggin adorable.  However, I take into account their comfort over my whims.  CoCo used to shiver like crazy outside when she was a puppy.  Hence her huge wardrobe.  Come Spring when it got warmer, she went around naked... and loved it!  Now she wont even let me put a bow on her. lol  If I put it on her, she will stand still, unmoving for 10 min.  If I ignore her, she will go outside to the corner of the house, and rub herself on it until her clothes rip.  Silly dog.  Needless to say, she is always naked.

Kobe doesn't seem to mind the cold, so he too is naked.

It doesn't make any difference to me either way.  Its up to the owner and up to the dog.  I know Sadie wouldn't let me put anything on her if I did want to!  She would tear it off immediately Tongue Tied!!!!

I'm not a huge fan of dressing up my dogs, unless it's necessary.  Lexi does have a sweater for the really cold days, but she seems to prefer to run around naked anyways - no matter how cold it is. Freya also has a coat she wears on super cold days, she doesn't like the cold, wet weather unlike her yorkie sister.

I do think it gets a little silly. I've heard of small dog owners putting pajamas on their dogs for bed, or dressing the dog up and walking it in a pet stroller. Is that really necessary? Oh well, as long as the dog enjoys it, to each their own.

I use a stroller, at dog shows and very crowded events. It keeps my little ones safe, off the ground. They're too heavy for me to carry one under each arm, and really too big for a dog bag, but still small enough to be susceptible to injury from being stepped on or snarked by a big dog. Also, sometimes we have quite a walk to the rings, and I don't want them worn out when it's time to go in. So, yeah, a stroller feels SILLY, but it works for them.
