Where did you get your dog?

Jeter came from a breeder on the Maryland shore.

Callie and Buster were from a shelter. Willie was a rescue.

All of mine either were pound dogs or rescued off the streets. One was rescued from a previous owner.

My most recent dog was through a Schutzhund trainer who imports his dogs from Germany.

Wolfie--BYB I think, but parents were registered and health-tested/certified.  I consider them a BYB because they didn't show or anything and they only owned one breeding pair.

     Falon- Breed rescue

Chase- I saw an ad online for a "free gsd that would be shot if no one wanted him."

    Quinn- Rescue organization.

    • Maggie: Flea Market (seriously) - ie, BYB
    • Ben:  Appalachian Mt Border Collie Rescue Co-op
    • Lu:  Purchased as older pup from reputable breeder
    • Tully:  "Stud fee pup" from my own breeding (I owned the sire, outside female) - registered working Maremma parents, all health tests done
    • Zhi:  Foster/adoption (I "fostered" her for, I think, about 3 min before failing Foster 101)
    • Gus:  Purchased as adult from reputable trainer
    • Ted:  Purchased as puppy from well-respected and reputable breeder
    • Lynn:  Shelter (another foster failure - I managed to hold out on her about 3 days)
    • Min:  My own rescue - captured after six months of running feral, after being left behind when farmer moved
Most of my rescues these days are owner relinquishments, upon referral from other rescue groups, trainers, vets, or shelters.  Some come directly from other rescues or trainers.  A very few come directly from shelters.  I also purchase in, very rarely (because there's rarely an opening!), dogs from other trainers that simply don't have "the right stuff" and just needs a bit of tweaking to make a nice farm dog or working migratory bird control dog.

Kale I got 8 and a half years ago from a shelter in the lower mainland in BC, Canada. He was to be the replacement for and ex boyfriend. And to this day he's my longest running relationship!

Maven, I found her at the SPCA in Pasadena, CA. She had her first birthday yesterday.

     1. Shelter/rescue.

Dahlia was picked up as a stray in Ohio, brought to a high-kill shelter where no one called for her and no one wanted to adopt her (we cannot figure out why!!).  She was pulled by a rescue, transported across country to Vermont (which is how I met her), and then we adopted her through that rescue.

My bi-color rattie, Button was bought from a breeder in a nearby town.  My tri-color, Zipper, was a kill shelter rescue with only 2 days left on her dance card.  Best thing we ever did, adopting that little dog!  She came with no abuse baggage and has been a great addition to the family and a wonderful playmate for my other pup.

Tucker(rip) - very reputable Border Collie breeder

    Babie(sense sold) - BYB/rescue

Taz - BYB/puppymill? (he was bought site-unseen, and in the only photos I saw of him there were many many crates and cages, along with the fact that he was slightly under weight[not any more!! hes so fat!] and covered in fleas.

Sammi - Free/rescue - the people who we got him from picked him up on the side of the road, and then had to give him to out high-kill shelter, so we took him instead

    2. Reputable breeders.

The second Belgian Malinois we got came with a breeding agreement and when she went in to heat we the breeder had picked a sire. She had 10 puppies, two of which we kept (we got to keep one and the breeder got to keep one, but the breeder decided to keep 6 so he left us keep 2).

Memory's from a backyard breeder we personally know. The breeder was a friend of a friend, and knew I had an interest in wolves and dogs. So when he got the litter he called me up and we went on a 6 hour drive. But it was worth it, because we picked out Memory and got a discount! He has bred quite a few wolf dogs now and I thought he was pretty trustworthy. He knew a lot about them and really really loved his dogs. All of his dogs were originally purchased from a reputable wolf dog breeder and he handles them well. He normally breeds them with each other but the area has a few wolves living there, and it was mating season, so I’m guessing a male wanted to find a female to go at it with and settled on one of the wolf dogs =)
