Last Thursday night (April 29) my Apricot Standard Poodle (Keisha) had 11 pups! Her first one was born at 4:10pm and her last one at 8pm. Nice, quick, no problems, and every single pup had one thing on it's mind - where's the chow???
Thankfully I was there because Keisha wanted nothing to do with the pups at first. She turned away from the first one - wouldn't lick it, wouldn't do anything. Had I not been there, the pups would have died. She didn't lick them or anything, until after the 4th pup was born. Suddenly she got interested, ate an afterbirth I held out to her, licked all the pups, and from then on was great, although she never did lick the pups right away. I had to break the sac with each pup. She's a wonderful mom now. She keeps those pups spotless and is great about nursing them.
We have 6 black females, 2 apricot females, and 3 apricot males. They are so precious!
Of course, 11 pups means LOTS of laundry! It works out nicely though - our whelping box is in our spare bedroom which my husband made into our laundry room! Very handy. My recliner is in there as well - I slept there for a week before the pups came, and for a week after they were born.
Pictures will be posted soon!
