Enjoy this story from Kaitlin in our social department! Friendship springs up in some unexpected places. Several months ago, I adopted an adorable Lab/ German shepherd mix who I named Harley. Through sleepless nights and accidents, we were always at each other’s side. Every night when I started making dinner, Harley would rest at my feet and pace around the kitchen. (Hoping for falling snacks no doubt!) This was our ritual, every night. She never wined, rarely begged, but was always close by. One night I noticed that Harley was not in her usual spot or in the kitchen at all! Because I had become so accustomed to her being next to me, I naturally panicked. I went to the living room to find my little girl scratching at the window and whimpering.
I pulled back the curtain to find a stunning black cat peering back at me. The light from inside bounced off of her green eyes making them twinkle. I smiled to myself and brushed it off, returning to the kitchen to slice some more veggies. When I had finished up I called Harley in, but she wouldn't come. I returned to the living room to find her still at the window, entertained by the cat.
Days passed ,and every night at around the same time, Harley would retreat to the window to have a play date with her new friend. As cute as this friendship was, I knew that this cat MUST belong to someone in the neighborhood. The next day, I passed the word around that a black cat was around the neighborhood. Within no time, a woman that lived a few blocks away had come to my door to inquire about the cat. That night, I invited her to come over to see if the cat would arrive. Right on schedule, there she was at the window, ready to meet up with Harley. The woman’s eyes lit up when she saw her cat, who had been lost for around two weeks, was looking back at her!. She ran outside and scooped up, Winnie, her 4 year old black cat.
After thanking me and exchanging information, we decided there was no way that Harley and Winnie could stay apart. We set up a time each week for a play date, so that these two could build on their new friendship. Every Friday, Harley wags her tail and knowing that she is going to see Winnie. The run, tumble and snuggle with each other. For two hours they do not leave each other’s side! And when their time is over, we find it difficult to break them apart. Who knew that the playful cat I saw standing by my window would become a lifelong friend ?!
