Goodbye Max (Infiniti) - NDR

Rainbow Bridge

The Rainbow Bridge is the theme of a work of poetic prose written some time between 1980 and 1992, whose original creator is unknown. The theme is of an other-worldly place to which a pet goes upon its death, eventually to be reunited with its owner.

    Goodbye Max (Infiniti) - NDR

This afternoon I lost Max, my Mini Lop rabbit.  The only saving grace is that I got to hold him in my arms as he went to the Rainbow Bridge.   I came home this afternoon to find him unresponsive, and was preparing to take him to the exotics E-Vet when his breathing changed, and I just knew somehow that this was the end.  I held him in my arms and looked into his face and told him "It's ok Max, I have you, you can go to heaven now".  And his next breath after that was his last.   Again, I'm consoled only by knowing that I was able to comfort him and hold him in my arms for those last moments.

I have no way of knowing Max's true age, as he was a shelter bunny, but based on guesses his minimum age would be 6-ish.  So he was definitely approaching the elderly status of bunny-ness, and it's my only hope that his passing was simply old age.  He showed no signs of having problems, was eating well and playing as of yesterday.  I think that's why it's such a shock.

I feel as though I can barely type through this flood of tears, but I need to share my love for him and my pain with others who I know will understand.  It's been wonderful to be able to share pictures and snippets of his life with caring people, and on a dog forum no less, so I thank you all for that.

Run free, my dear dear friend.  Meet Sadi, my wonderful collie, who will show you the most wonderful bunny places on the other side and protect you.

Oh, I'm so sorry.  I've had bunnies too and they definately become part of your life and family.  He was very, very cute.

    RIP, Max

Oh, Max... you beautiful bunny.  So sorry he is gone so suddenly, but what a good thing that you got to hold him as he passed away.  Our sympathies in your mourning.  (Hugs)

    I'm so sorry.

My Skip passed away much like your Max; sort of out of the blue one day. He was fine in the morning, and when I came home around noon he was gone. Just like that. I didn't know Skip's age as I got him as an adult. Hopefully our 2 buns are hopping around in a field of greens.

Thank you everyone for your nice words.  They mean so much to me, and help me feel better.  Thank you again for letting me share him with you.

After it happened, you were actually the person I thought of.  I remembered Skip's passing, and it did remind me of how Max went.

This has definitely been the brightest thought of my day.  I hope they've met each other and are playing.

Today I'm going out to buy a pretty birdbath to put over the spot where Max is.  He's next to my swing in the backyard, and with the birdbath soon to be there as well, I'll have a beautiful spot to hang out and think of him.

I'm so sorry --- Max looks very sweet in the photos.  What a cute little bunny.  I've never had a bunny, but people in our old neighborhood did, and I used to feed him (and their cats) when they went on vacation.  I just loved petting his soft fur and feeding him bits of lettuce or carrot.  His quiet and gentle manner was so calming.

I'm glad for both of you that you were together when he died - that's such a comforting thought.  I hope each day brings fewer tears for you.  Take care.

I can picture Max hippity hopping across the Bridge, glancing back to make sure you know that he will be OK till you get there.  (Don't worry, Max, I don't think Mako the Beagle is allowed to harass bunnies up there!)   It's hard to lose our little friends, but nice to know that there are meadows to play in where nothing bad ever happens again.

You gave me a lovely image, thank you Anne.

I decided to get a bird bath to place over Max's resting place, and the first one I saw at Lowe's had a brown bunny surrounded by flowers carved into the base.  It seemed perfect, like it was meant to be.

Thank you to everyone for your nice words that have given me so much comfort.

Lisa I have been away and missed this, I am so sorry to hear about Max.  I hope you will share a picture of your new bird bath that honors Max's life.  It sounds beautiful and made especially for him.
