He wasn't my dog, but my heart is breaking tonight. My good friend's german shepherd, Oliver, dropped dead at the beach this afternoon. He was only 6.
Oliver was, without question, one of the best natured dogs I have ever met. Intact, the guardian of 5 acres and a bunch of ranch animals - he never showed aggression towards person or dog. He welcomed all visitors, allowed children to push him around, and mentored Sasha and our late dog Ivan. Eko only had the chance to meet him once. He was confident, watchful, and always tolerant. His obedience training was minimal. He was the mythical GOOD DOG.
Please light a candle for his older sister, an elderly jack russell mix, who is grief stricken and guarded his body after he fell. If dogs are our children, he was like my nephew. I can't imagine her place without him. I will probably bring Sasha and Eko around tomorrow to help console Rainbow, the jack russell girl.
Good bye, sweet Ollie. You are gone way too soon, and will be missed by your family and everyone who came out to the ranch. You were one in a million.
Here is Sasha and Ivan meeting Ollie for the first time:
