Rainbow Bridge

The Rainbow Bridge is the theme of a work of poetic prose written some time between 1980 and 1992, whose original creator is unknown. The theme is of an other-worldly place to which a pet goes upon its death, eventually to be reunited with its owner.

    Dear Sweet Girl,

I am sorry your end of days came as it did.  I didn't get to spend much time with you, but you affected me just the same as if I'd known you forever.

You were likely well-loved by someone, judging from your sweet personality and pudgy body.  It saddens me that the person may not have had the courage to set you free from your ailments and left the deed to others in a place you didn't know with a name that was unfamiliar.

Many others have gone to the Bridge before you and I'm sure you were greeted by i-dog dogs who knew of your plight.  I asked Shari to wait for you and say hello.  If you like snow, she'll know all the best places for it.

Run free sweet Olivia.  You are whole again.

I have followed the story, and it makes me feel so sad.  Run free again sweet girl...there's a whole crew of idoggers who will greet you.

Dear Olivia - I saw your name on the post and started to weep.  I have seen your picture on my desktop for days now, and every time I lifted you up it brought a tear to my eyes (most often ... many).

Dear girl -- and I'm sure there were others who crossed with you or at the same time, and my tears are for them as well -- know that all it takes for admittance to Rainbow Bridge is that a human loved and cared for you or that you somehow 'changed' their life.

So you can wait for me or Sharismom or Marty or any one of us or ALL of us if you want because I'm happy to have you wait for MY hug and neck scratch.  I *know* Ms. Socks waited for you (along with Shari and others)   She was an "old lady" when she came to my husband and I and we loved her dearly.  Curley too.

But at least now your pain is at end and you're left to wonder who these people are you cared for you but never met you ... or to see Shari again.  Up at the Bridge you can be "outside" -- either because you loved the fresh air just because you loved it, or whether it was to help you breathe again -- no such maladies touch you any more.  Maybe Ms. Socks will share her ball with you -- or maybe you just want to chase the puppies.  Or MAYBE you just want to lie in the sun for a while where it's warm and clean.

We loved you Olivia.  Know that, girl.  Without ever knowing you I loved you.  And I will love you til I meet you ... and THEN we'll have fun, too!

Run free, sweet girl. I hope you find lots of good spots to rest at the Bridge!

Olivia, don't you worry - all the idog angel dogs will be your friends and you will have lots of fun with them.  And, now, you have a special human, too.

I just went and read Olivia's story.  I really hope and pray she will find my Tommy cat and they can be together--two sweet animals who didn't really have a specific human.

Oh, I'm in tears.  I'm on the forum so infrequently that I missed your thread in the other section, but I just read it now.  My heart is broken for sweet Olivia, and it also goes out to you, Tina, for having experienced something so sad, frustrating, bewildering, etc.  Those of us who've nursed an elderly and/or ill dog until the last moment, making sure our voices and our touch was with them until the last possible second cannot comprehend a dog like Olivia finding herself with strangers in a strange place.  If only she could've told you what happened.

Olivia, you are in my heart tonight and I'll ask my Tonka to look for you at the Bridge.  We used to tell him all the time that he had so much love showered on him during his life that he'd have a ton leftover to share when he became an angel, visiting animals on earth that were alone, ill or scared, without the voice or touch of someone who truly cared for them.  Even if you felt that your humans failed you in your final days/weeks, please know that there are many, many of us who will carry your sweet face in our memories.  You are free of pain now - enjoy the companionship of your special new friends at the Bridge.

Hugs to you Tina - I'm sure you're feeling very sad, and I'm thinking of you.
