my friend is gone

Rainbow Bridge

The Rainbow Bridge is the theme of a work of poetic prose written some time between 1980 and 1992, whose original creator is unknown. The theme is of an other-worldly place to which a pet goes upon its death, eventually to be reunited with its owner.

    my friend is gone

My beautiful Lucy has gone to the bridge today.  She was nearly 10 and had a mysterious optic Neuropathy that we tried to treat with antibiotics, antiinflammatories, diet etc--nothing worked.  The vet stronly suspects a tumor of the pituitary gland as she also had some signs of Cushing's.  We will miss her terribly

I'm so sorry for your loss and like pofi_, I hope that her memories will give you some comfort, although I know that nothing I can say will heal the hole left in your heart. It's so sad that you have to go through this.

Oh gosh, I'm so sorry.  When you have tried SO hard to treat something and you can't help them.  But please -- you have to know that when she greeted all her new friends at the Bridge, the first thing she said was "My Mom tried SO hard ... and I just couldn't stay with her!"

So her new friends assured her that she could wait for you and that it was all going to be ok now, and that YOU would be ok too.  Many of us on here have lost our friends ... some of us have lost many.  one of the things I take the greatest comfort in, is that THEY get support too because so often they truly don't want to leave us either.

She is pain-free now and feels fine.  All of the things she loves to do most -- she will find new places to do them beyond Rainbow Bridge.

    rredbird,
This Cushing's disease is horrible because there is no cure.  Over the summer she started having a few accidents and gained weight; in the fall her eyes looked strange.  The blood panel indicated Cushings but by this time her eyes were dilated and I took her to an opthamologist in Akron Oh and he put her on prednisone so they couldn't do a test for the Cushings (her eyes really got bad fast) Then we did Doxycycline ( We couldn't handle the price of an MRI so we tried all the alternatives) and finally Imuran (made her really sick and accelerated the neurologic signs)  Her eyes were bulging, she was totally blind and scared and her neck looked stiff.  When I took her in yesterday my vet said she would have died at home. We just loved her and Iwill miss her forever.

Lucy is gorgeous!  She looks like she could have been related to my Lani.  Wish I had a pic to show you. *Sigh*

This is an excerpt from a poem I found very moving called 'The Fourth Day" by Martin Scott Kosins.

But there will be, I assure you, a fourth day
    when ..............
along with the memory of your pet -- and piercing
    through the
heaviness in your heart -- there will come a
    realization that
belongs only to you. It will be as unique and
    strong as our
relationship with each animal we have loved, and
    lost. This
realization takes the form of a Living Love --
    like the heavenly
scent of a rose that remains after the petals
    have wilted, this
Love will remain and grow -- and be there for us
    to remember. It is
a love we have earned. It is the legacy our pets
    leave us when they
go. And it is a gift we may keep with us as long
    as we live. It is
a Love which is ours alone. And until we
    ourselves leave, perhaps
to join our Beloved Pets -- it is a Love we will
    always possess.
