Buddy the daycare dog (janobonano)

Rainbow Bridge

The Rainbow Bridge is the theme of a work of poetic prose written some time between 1980 and 1992, whose original creator is unknown. The theme is of an other-worldly place to which a pet goes upon its death, eventually to be reunited with its owner.

    Buddy the daycare dog (janobonano)

I just got a text from the kids' teacher that Buddy is at the bridge. I don't know how, I didn't ask... he was young and healthy so I am guessing he was hit by a car, but I really have no idea. Sad

Run free Buddybudderdog, the girls and I will really miss your greetings and playing keep-away.

that must be hard to explain to the children there.

That's what I was thinking, too.  I bet the children will be sad and will miss him.

Run free, sweet boy.  You'll be a special guardian angel for all your "kids" now.

Oh, how sad. I remember when we first met Buddy the daycare dog. Run free, sweet boy.

I have a bit of an update. The girls haven't gone to daycare for three weeks now; our summer schedule got a bit mixed up. We go the least amount, so when she has kids that are more frequent that need more time, we get bumped. Plus the teacher has been on vacation for a week.

So anyway I took the girls to a classmate's birthday party this weekend and got the scoop.

Part one… Apparently Buddy's lung issue hadn't cleared up like I thought. He did get better, but it never really went away, and recently flared up again. One of his lungs never reinflated or was at a very limited capacity or something; I'm not really sure what was going on. But I guess he had been much more lethargic lately and was having trouble breathing.

Part two… The teacher had a high school graduation party for her kid one weekend. They had a lot of guests, including some daycare kids/families. Buddy was under a table, and one of the kids crawled under the table. You can see where this is going. Sad I'm not sure what happened, if he felt trapped or if the kid fell on him or laid on him or what, but he bit her in the face. I don't know the extent, but I know she had multiple puncture wounds, including one that went through her lip and a deep scratch, which warranted an ER visit and stitches.

It was not his fault, but because of the decreasing quality of life with the lung issue, plus the bite, he was pts. It was certainly not an easy decision, and I know the owners are having a very hard time with this. I know they loved their dog and he was treated really well. She also loves her daycare kids as her own. It is a sad, horrible situation all around.

Oh, no --- what a heartbreaking story!  It's hard enough to face the decision of euthanizing a beloved pet when they have a health crisis, but to add to that a bite (especially from a dog known to be so good with children), and for the child to be someone they care about, too . . . . I can't even imagine what Buddy's owners are feeling.  I hope they were able to take some time after the bite to enjoy at least a day or two with him so their last memories together were peaceful.

Thanks for posting the update, Janice.  My heart goes out to the family, and all the daycare kids and parents who I'm sure are affected, too.

Oh Jan, that is so sad. Poor Buddy, his owners and the child that was hurt. Just a sad way for his life to culminate but hopefully everyone understands the circumstances and forgives the sweet boy. I hope he's running free from pain now and the child is healing and won't have a lasting fear from the experience.
