Copper - Rupert's buddy

Rainbow Bridge

The Rainbow Bridge is the theme of a work of poetic prose written some time between 1980 and 1992, whose original creator is unknown. The theme is of an other-worldly place to which a pet goes upon its death, eventually to be reunited with its owner.

    Copper - Rupert's buddy

Some of you may remember Rupert's buddy, Copper. He came from a byb, was not properly socialized, and had issues with aggression (dogs and people) his whole life. Rupert was one of the only dogs he would play with, and it took us a lot of work to get that far. His owners and the trainer worked very hard with him for years to help him, but in the end they decided to end his suffering. He got an ear infection, and trying to get drops in his ear and trying to clean them was a struggle. He bit them, they tried muzzling him but after a few times he wouldn't let them put it on. I know it was a very very difficult decision, they loved him very much.

Unfortunately, it was a fight until the very end. At the vet, even after he had taken something to relax him, and he had been tranquilized, he lifted his head up and bit his owner's finger. The vet said he's never seen a dog move like that after being tranquilized.

Run free, Copper. You are safe now, free from all your fears and pain. Rupert and I will miss you.

Janice, I'm so sorry to hear about Copper.  I remember seeing photos you've posted before of him playing with Rupert.  He was a beautiful boy.  I can't imagine how his family is feeling.  My heart goes out to them, and to you guys since you obviously had great affection for him, too.

My husband had a co-worker who went through a similar situation.  He and his wife did all they could to help their female Rottie mix who had those kinds of issues.  She was brilliantly smart -- she'd master any trick they taught her.  But despite working with a few different trainers and trying various strategies, her issues never got to the point where they could completely relax with her.  She bit or snapped at visitors in their home, outings with her just weren't possible, and vet visits were a nightmare.  Their lifestyle became so limited -- they couldn't go anywhere and leave her in others' care, they couldn't have friends or family over without confining her to a room alone (where she was very unhappy), etc.  In the end, they made the same decision as Copper's family, and they were heartbroken because they loved her so.  It was years ago, and it still gives me a lump in my throat when I think of it . . . I met her once and remember trying not to make any sudden moves while sitting in their house.  She was a beautiful girl, but tormented for some reason.

Copper -- I hope you are happy and relaxed in a way you weren't able to fully enjoy on earth.  I'm glad you had playful experiences with your buddy, Rupert, and I hope you can enjoy the companionship of friends who make you feel safe and secure now.

Thanks everyone. I guess I knew it was coming, and actually it probably should have happened sooner, but it still doesn't make it any easier.

These things are always so sad, especially when you think how darn preventable most of this stuff is.  He was such a beautiful dog - just wish he could have had a better start in life so that the family who loved him wouldn't have had to part with him this way... but, at least he's all better now and in the meadow now waiting for them.
