Janice, I'm so sorry to hear about Copper. I remember seeing photos you've posted before of him playing with Rupert. He was a beautiful boy. I can't imagine how his family is feeling. My heart goes out to them, and to you guys since you obviously had great affection for him, too.
My husband had a co-worker who went through a similar situation. He and his wife did all they could to help their female Rottie mix who had those kinds of issues. She was brilliantly smart -- she'd master any trick they taught her. But despite working with a few different trainers and trying various strategies, her issues never got to the point where they could completely relax with her. She bit or snapped at visitors in their home, outings with her just weren't possible, and vet visits were a nightmare. Their lifestyle became so limited -- they couldn't go anywhere and leave her in others' care, they couldn't have friends or family over without confining her to a room alone (where she was very unhappy), etc. In the end, they made the same decision as Copper's family, and they were heartbroken because they loved her so. It was years ago, and it still gives me a lump in my throat when I think of it . . . I met her once and remember trying not to make any sudden moves while sitting in their house. She was a beautiful girl, but tormented for some reason.
Copper -- I hope you are happy and relaxed in a way you weren't able to fully enjoy on earth. I'm glad you had playful experiences with your buddy, Rupert, and I hope you can enjoy the companionship of friends who make you feel safe and secure now.
