We lost a special boy today

Rainbow Bridge

The Rainbow Bridge is the theme of a work of poetic prose written some time between 1980 and 1992, whose original creator is unknown. The theme is of an other-worldly place to which a pet goes upon its death, eventually to be reunited with its owner.

We lost a special boy today

My rescue group recently took on the capture and care of three wild/feral dogs. A few months ago, we were able to capture two of them. Willow, a 8 year old Wheaten Terrier mix, and her friend, Cedar, a 4 year old mixed breed little boy.

Since we're in Florida, the obvious risk of heartworm is great. Both dogs tested positive, high positive. Cedar was neutered a few weeks back, and 10 days ago began his heartworm treatment, under his new vet. Things were going well.

The progress that these two have made was remarkable. They are house trained, walk on leashes, interact with other animals (dogs and cats, and they used to EAT cats!), and adore children. I'll be the first to admit, I was completely skeptical about taking on these dogs. But they've thrived. Cedar began to wag his tail, and give kisses. Remarkable, for a dog born in the woods with only a few months of human contact!

Yesterday, Cedar took a turn for the worst. His began to cough up blood clots. My director, his foster dad, took him straight to the vets. They upped his medications, and things were looking better later that day. He returned this morning for his scheduled follow up, as per the vet. At 11:00, we received the call that Cedar had been let go. The heartworms were just too much for him. He tried so hard to be so strong, and we will all miss him terribly.

And if everyone could keep a special thought out there for my director, I know he is taking this especially hard. And for miss Willow, because for the first time, she'll be without her guardian and safety net.

    RIP amazing boy.

Run free, sweet Cedar-no more sickness! And bless all who took on the big job of caring for these pups. You're in my thoughts today. Willow, hang in there, girl.

What a shame--  I so wish more would use the long "slow" method but it's hard when it takes 6-10 months to get a clear occult that way.  When large numbers of parasites die they can clog the kidneys and make them not function, they can cause blood clots in heart/lungs/brain ... so many many things can go wrong.  What a sad sad thing.

Rescue groups just plain can't win sometimes.  *sigh*

Play hard in the Meadow, Cedar.

Our vet was more concerned about Willow, we've already started the slow method with her. She was also spayed - and came through with flying colors. Cedar was younger, and healthier overall. This just goes to show that nothing is certain, and heartworm is a SERIOUS problem.

    Run free, & fast, Cedar.

I'm so sorry, Erica.  I've been following their story on FB.  It was a tremendous effort on the part of your shelter and such a tragedy that Cedar didn't make it.  I'll keep your director in my thoughts.

This makes me want to cry.  Run free sweet Cedar and know that in the end of your life you were well loved by many.

{{Hugs}} for all at the shelter and especially Willow and the Director.

Jackie - I posted the story on the shelters facebook page... I wasn't able to read the whole thing without tears.

Run free, fast & healthy Cedar!  There's a Shepherdy girl at the Bridge who'd love to be your friend until your foster person can join you.

Erica, please pass on my condolences to Willow & your Director.
